Default Running in a Newmans cam - how do you do yours?

Hi,

Rang newmans and was informed not to run the cam in the kent/piper way, instead "take it easy for the first 100 miles".

Where as burtonpower informed me to run at 2500k for 20mins.

Which is best for this camshaft?

Many thanks

I did mine for 20mins but driving it and ensuring the rev's stayed between 2-3k, seems to be fine a year later.

2500k for 20 minutes.
Spoke to my tuner the other day about this as i'm fitting a cam in a few weeks. He said that camshafts don't come completely smooth from the manufacturer so you need to smooth off the lobes by running them at a constant rpm for around 20 minutes. (or two lots of 10 minutes depending on your cvh's temps! lol)

Also make sure your oil levels are topped up.

Smooth the lobes off??!! lol Who is your tuner?
It's because the cam and lifters are soft and need to work harden for the first 20mins or so.

I thought that was why you have cam lube. As the lobes will not be perfectly smooth out of the box and can score the lifters?!

I think I have misunderstood him. I see what you mean by the cam is soft. Just read this on pumaracing.com "The key thing is not to let the engine idle. Letting the engine idle can wear the peak of the cam lobes away before they have had chance to bed in". Hence the lube I suppose.

So when fitting a new cam you need to fit new lifters as well?

Yes mate lifters and cam should always be fitted together so they can work harden at the same rate...
Cam lube is used so that they are not running dry until the oil gets round! lol

That what I meant with the cam lube as I read that anything under 1500rpm (ish) will not have sufficient oil supply and cause the components to score/wear? so for the initial start up.

I think I need to start paying more attention to people when they are telling me these things

Sorry to hijack this thread dave_s2.

Is it worth changing the revs every so often during the run in between 2000-3000rpm?

not really, the cams are happy with a constant rpm, its different to running in rings
