It's because the cam and lifters are soft and need to work harden for the first 20mins or so.
I thought that was why you have cam lube. As the lobes will not be perfectly smooth out of the box and can score the lifters?!

I think I have misunderstood him. I see what you mean by the cam is soft. Just read this on pumaracing.com "The key thing is not to let the engine idle. Letting the engine idle can wear the peak of the cam lobes away before they have had chance to bed in". Hence the lube I suppose.

So when fitting a new cam you need to fit new lifters as well?
