Default Is it worth getting a stage 3 head?`

Im going to take my head off today to see if i have damaged the pistons, if i have then im going to replace them with wossner pistons but i wasnt sure if it would be a good idea to throw a stage 3 head of even just a port and polished head on with them? I will be running Omex (efi) when it goes back together, so whats your opinions?

Thanks, Joe.

It all depends on who did the stage 3 head.

There are many so called "stage 3" heads that are worse than a factory un-modified head.
Make sure a reputable head porter has done the head. There are a couple of experienced cvh guys around - NMS being one, Cnc Heads being another....

Cheers

As Perry says, if it's not done properly then it could actually be worse than a stock head!
Big valve (stage 3) heads are not needed unless your going 300bhp+ anyway...

A good porter can get the standard 42mm valves to flow as much air (or more) than the "oversize" valves. The gains in airflow come from propper port resizing and carefull shaping in the right areas. The cvh doesnt suffer from valves too small, but highly restrictive ports. However, if a standard inlet manifold is used, the porting and big valves is largely a waste.

The larger valve in most cases is not required. Oversize valves is a sales tactic used by some shops. Everyone likes to tell thier friends that they have a "stage 3 head" whoopeee!!!

lol

I have been told by a head specialist that the only time it's worth changing the valves is if your exhaust ones are shot because standard ones are sodium filled. Aftermarket one are not hence need to be larger

Considering i got cnc to build me my big valve head at just under a grand.I should bloody hope it works. I'm aware the valves are more than big enough as standard but with the ports made bigger, only makes sense to me to make the valves bigger to match the increased volume of air.... end of day i'm no expert but i'm running far less boost for the same bhp!
Plus the inlet manifold still not been matched. So i can't 100% agree that head work is a waste without inlet being done... As i've noticed big difference on how the car performs.Of course i've got the inlet manifold on the list to be matched up shortly..

My valve's only being slightly bigger :

inlet 43mm
exhaust 37.9mm

compared to the 45mm inlet that most think about..

Hello Essex,

You will see more gains again from inlet manifold work - more power at less boost
