Default 2wd Gearbox

My gearbox has had a whine / rumble which everyone I spoke to about it seemed to agree it would be the input shaft bearings as the noise is their at idle but dissapears when you dip the clutch.

I took the box out last week, and dropped it off at a gearbox specialist. Just got a call this afternoon, to say he has inspected the box, and the all the bearings and syncros are spot on. He said the gear teeth were showing signs of wearing through the hardening coating. He also said the bearings were not shimmed properly and the bearings were not loaded up enough. His opinion was that reshimming the bearings and taking up the slack would not likely stop the whining and that its likely to be the teeth causing the nosie.

Im not questioning his advice or anything, the guys supposed to be the man when it comes to gearboxes.

I was planning on putting some Forte Gear treatment in when I refill the box tomorrow, but not sure if its compatible the 2wd gearoil which im told is ATF Dextron stuff.

Should I use the Forte ATF treatment or Gear Treatment??

Thanks in advance

DON'T use std dexron/atf.
Use only Castrol TQ-D, about £9 Litre at Halfords etc, you'll need 2.55 Litres, you can and I have used gear oil 75W90, this will quieten things down, but will/can be be a bit of a pig to change when cold.
There were many variations of the T5 internals, even as supplied to ford for the cossie, so I'd stick with the closest stuff to the original, the TQ-D, unless you have serious wear.

Yes, its the same stuff i put in last time. Do you know if the Forte gear treatment is ok to add to this?. Just looking for an additive to try and get the box a bit quieter.

There's a drain plug and fill plug so simple.

Forte is normally good stuff, but it may make the oil even slipperier, which may make it quieter but won't help the synchro's, these need friction to work.
A gear oil would be a lot quieter if that bad, I'd use that before forte myself, but as it's needing a build anyway might as well just put some forte in and see ?

I think I might just stick some normal gear oil in and see what it sounds like. If it recks the synchros, long term then, they will just get changed. anyway. Whats the best gear oil to try, just standard 75w90 ??

Why do you recommend not using the Ford oil? I changed the oil in mine a couple of years ago and was recommended a certain oil (can't remember what it was but it was expensive), I did this and it then started to crunch when changing from 2nd to 3rd, I then changed it again using Ford oil and it has been fine ever since.

On the drivers side fom underneath, you will see two filler plugs, the lower of which is obviously the drain plug, the top one the filler, it's a bit tight as it's tucked up against the side of the tunnel, so you need a can with a flexible hose to get in there, undo with a 3/4 rachet drive.

I use ATF which is the reccomendation.
