Default My new RS500 T4 Turbo - What changes needed to fit from my current spec?

Hi all,

I have been out in a few T4 powered cars and I loved it, So I decided to get myself one.

This is my current spec.

-2wd 3dr
-Running stage 3
-Greens
-T34.48
-60mm Airtec intercooler
-Group A head gasket
-Engine has standard internals
-Standard Gearbox and clutch

What changes will I need to do to fit the T4 and make it reliable?

Spec of the turbo is genuine RS500 T4. 360degree bearing and ported wastegate area.

What kind of head work will be needed. What about the gearbox and clutch?
Also what about prices. Anything else???

I'm pretty sure these fit the std 2wd manifold, you don't have to do any head mods if you don't want to, but will need a complete remap/chip whatever you do, assuming you want more power a swap to greys or similar would be wise, dependant on how much you want.
A alcon 6 paddle would be my choice of clutch, with alcon cover also.
I would talk to who ever is doing the chip/map for parts advice.

A T4 without head work I thought would suffer big time with Turbo surge..
Would the standard internals handle 450BHP+ with the T4
Thinking of injectors such as Simens 83lbph.

I will talk to my tuner about getting it fitted. Just wanted PFs members input.

Some input from tuners would be appreciated..

A 100% std yb engine if in good order will be no problem at all, the std pistons are certainly good enough for up to 500bhp, as many have shown.

think you need an altonator drop bracket to use this turbo

and if you want it reliable and make the most of the turbo you will need

ported head
cams
low comp pocketed pistons
destressed rods ( ballenced maybe)
multi layer gasket
remap
grp a pump
arp bolts
long studded 200 block
high pressure pump
better injector than a grey

thats what i would do anyway

wont fit,You need to find a t4 trouser section which are very rare plus your turbo damper wont fit.

Vman has stated the 'expensive alternative' which you dont need to do, however for peace of mind id fit a wrc gasket and check your bottom end, if you wanted 400-420 safely youd need siemens 83 blacks, fuel pump rewire, Ideally better inlet manifold, new air filter hose and boost pipe, Live map or chip+ setup on rolling road ( IMO reyland)new plugs, new coil, dizzy (or convert to coilpack) new leads, etc

Also need a decent paddle clutch , the t5 has been taken over 450+bhp and is strong for an old design.

head porting+cams come after 400+bhp.

RS500 T4 fitted my engine no problem with standard 3 door exhaust manifold. Had to grind a little off a lug on the head to fit compressor housing and use RS500 turbo hanger.

My T4 fitted straight swap. you will need bigger injectors, drop bracket and turbo hanger, boost hoses.

Lincoln and Steve what other mods did you do before you fitted the T4?

My 3dr has standard CR and no mods to internals. All standard.

bigger injectors,
drop bracket
turbo hanger
boost hoses.
Alcon clutch + plate

bigger fuel pump.

If I was to fit the above and with a new chip anf full map what kind of BHP and torque will I see.

Steve, That figure of 491.9 and 472 of torque is impressive. What other mods did you have done over standard to achieve this if you dont mind me asking?

Cheers

Roosies T4 fitted the 2wd trousers perfectly.
Don't lower the CR unless you need to, as it will increase lag on what will already be a laggy turbo, decently set up it won't need lowering.
The ones I've been in didn't do anything serious until about 4300, by which time a T34 car is a long way ahead, just depends what you want from the car.
Plenty of our Scandinavian buds running over 500 on group a HG and arp stud/nut kit without problem/
Your best bet imo is work out/decide how much power you want to end up with ?, then you will have a much better idea of the spec you need engine wise to make that power.

My mate ran a T4 on a completely standard 4x4 engine with 55LB siemens and it made 430bhp @25psi IIRC. However it was quite laggy, only came on boost around 4500+ His was one of the Mike R Ball Bearing cored jobs which are supposed to reduce lag too.

In my humble opinion to make the most of a T4 you really need to be able to rev past the 7000rpm limiter which means quite a bit of engine work is required.

I you want a bit more go up the revs, simple thing to do is fit a .63 housing to your turbo or use a GT30 or T38 instead.

Never had a T4 but my mate had one on his, i was under the impression it's the kind of turbo that you can't just throw on any old engine - you need a proper spec'd engine that will work in partnership with the turbo to see the benefits.

I would say a cam change would be important along with pistons to suit, 83Ib injectors would be up to it but maybe an inlet change would benefit.

Best speak to an engine builder for advice as to what will and won't work

How many miles has your current engine done? Does it smoke or rattle etc?

I would ask the person who is going to map it what injectors they advise and the rest of the spec they would go for eg cams etc.

Isn't there a way to make the T4 to start boosting around 3000-3500RPM

Ray your best speaking to a mapper regarding that, i would say it would be dependant on the whole setup where it starts boosting etc.

Looking at your original spec you will need an uprated clutch, i use an AP 6 Paddle but i have felt an Alcon and it was better than mine - also you will need to mod the inlet/outlet on the cooler to run T4 size pipes.

Haven't posted on here for ages, but this has got to be the most sensible advice I've seen on PF!

err i do know thanks and plenty

he stated he wanted reliablity from his set up and to make any use of a t4 you need higher revs

hence arp's

and i stated thats what i would do

im not a man who just bolts on a turbo and then says

why dont i have 600 bhp lol like some

i stated what i would do thats all

if you cant read then you shouldnt be posting

and the engine will need to come apart to fit a mulit layer anyway to ensure the block is flat or it may fail

so if you do want to use the t4 and make good use of it then may aswell do a bit more to the engine so it will cope
as ayou aint gonna want it to last 5 mins and have to come apart again
