Default Favours for family?

Right here goes, where do you stand on doing favours for your family...

My sister has just bought a new kitchen and wants me to fit it for her, she has a complete kitchen in at the moment and wants me to strip the old one out, raise the floor and make a step into the kitchen, skim walls, plumb and electric, fit new units floor and wall, tile, paint and fit all new hood/hob/oven....

I have said it is a week job for me on my own and as i have to take the time off work and as im on agency i would need paying....

i asked for well under what i normally get paid at my normal job and she has started to complain saying that she wants me to do it on my weekends for free....

Where you all stand and how far do you go on a free job even tho it is family?

I'd do anything for family without even thinking about charging them.

i would happily do it in my own time.. as long as it didnt interfere with other stuff that i had planned.
This would obviously mean that the person would have to wait longer to get things done.. but thats the compromise when you aint paying anything to have it fitted!

I'd probably like a little reimbursement but that's the sort of person I am

Either way, you're probably gonna look a coont if you don't do it or if you charge her, at least if your family is anything like mine you will. But if you do decide to do it I think it's only fair she covers costs/expenses of it, i.e. materials etc. She can't expect you to do that.

Get another builder round and get him to quote a price while your sister is there and when the shock hits her i think she will help you out a little!

If not dont fit it!

its not one of them things like helping them move when ya dont expect to get paid, you doin a hard job which will take alot of your time...Tho if she can put up with you only coming round 1/2 days a week and living in the house with a bare kitchen for a few weeks then maybe you could do it for free!

you could always lie about the cost of matriels

"yeah these screws cost Ł10 for two! there very special!"

Aj, would you loose money to help family as in a weeks wage?

Cabturbo, thing is she wants it doing when she wants it doing and not when i can do it? I work exteremly long hours, I start at 04.00 most mornings and finish at round 21.00 and if i have a weekend to myself i need to chill the fook out. I wanted to take time off to d it as i cant really do it at the weekend.

Just to give you an idea of what i asked for ...Ł50 for a full weeks work!

No, what im saying is - if im doing a favour for family (i've done em loads in the past) then they know it's a favour & dont bug me about how fast i complete it. They know i'll do it & i'll get it done ASAP but they dont expect me to take time out of my busy schedule to get it done. So if im gonna offer to do a favour i make sure i've got the time to do it in the 1st place.

Thing is a kitchen cant be picked up and put down just like that...once it is ripped out then the newun needs to be wacked in as soon as possible ...

I can see where you coming from and maybe i should tell them i havnt got time, but on that hand i dont like seeing them struggle....

As above i reckon shes taking the mickey a little.... I reckon you should get her to sort out some quotes and you'll fit it for 50% of what she gets quoted, or get her to cover your week off works wages and you work with her.

I bet if something went wrong etc when fitting it (not that it would do!) she'd be the first to make you pay!

Chris, thats the thing, she has just told me her other halfs dad is going to mitre the worktops...The guy(no disrespect) couldnt even put a ikea unit together and ended up getting his daughter to do it, he dont even own a router let alone the jig to do it, or the stands and at 50 or so a pop the worktops aint something you can just go get again if you make a mistake...........So god knows how he will do it. She only asked him as i had mine done by a m8 who charged me a days rate of Ł120, and she thinks cos he is a m8 of mine he sould do it for cheaper then he charged me!!!!!!!!

the thing is if she didnt set aside money for having it done why did she buy a new kitchen in the first place? cos she thought she'd get a free ride thats why! so theres ya answer babe, you can do it knowing she knew full well all along you wouldnt let her get mugged off... and what happens next time? you';re not her personal handy man, if she has her own place she's big enough to pay for things to be done if you're busy... its really wound me up that she or her fella hasnt offered to pay you. say you'll do it for half the price of her best quote. ur not a mug dont let her treat you like one

why should u lose money to do someone a favour, thats not how it works, if shes got half a brain(no offence) then she would realise that too!!?

Thats not a favour, thats a fecking quest

I think the fairest way to do it, is that she pays you what you would of earned that week so your not loosing out. You cant exactly tell your mortgage or gas/electric man that cause your such a nice guy and fitted your Sis's kitchen for free that you'd like to miss the payments for that week .....

If she doesnt agree to it, then thats just blatantly cheap skating with a rocket on both boots!

But if you dont mind doing it for nothing, then go fo it

Surely if your gonna buy a kitchen and need all the work done shes asked you for she must have budgeted for it, so expecting you to do for free is a joke TBH,

charge her m8 im not a tight fooker but my attitude is if u dont do it they would pay someone alot more so even if u charge em half their saving money.

its always hard with friends aswell, i usually charge them half what i charge myself out at work for(which puts em of most of the time) your skilled at what u do and thats why you get paid for it.

Tell em to go and fit it themselves and then they will realise Ł200 a day isnt so bad to get it done properly and in half the time.
