Default Serious question (money and work)..

Been thinking about work and where Im at in my life and from where I stand the way I see it is that as long as im employed by somebody I'll never be as well off as Id hope. I know been self employed isnt a walk in the park (did it for one year for a contract) but most people I know that are self employed tend to in general be far better off than them that arent. Whats peoples thoughts???

cheers

Steve

as said, depends on a few things...

Current climate for your business field
Your ability to generate work
your contacts and influence to ensure work comes to you
Your ability to do the job
The competition in your field.

I am self employed, well, run my own firm with my mate and with a couple of lads working for us, we do ok, and to my mates we most likely appear to be flush, BUT we work bloddy hard and put the hours in, plus can't just switch off at the end of the day as any worries for the business are OUR worries.

Ok, we may have a few quid more in our pockets and a bit more freedom, but you earn that etc dosh, and when things get hard, it is YOU that have to suffer financially and mentally.

Still wouldn't have it any other way though!

Yeah, my dad runs his own company and ive seen the stress it puts him under, but then again Ive also seen his 350k house so not all bad. When I was self employed myself I had to have an operation that needed 6 weeks to recover, I couldnt afford not to be working so had to go back after 3 and that was stressful then. It just seems the only real future for me would be to go down that avenue again?

Very fair comment... if you want something its only right you earn it.

You feel better when you step back and see the things you have achieved by your own means... rewarding

It comes down to a job I did two weeks back, I was charged out at Ł1100 for a day but only saw Ł204 of it. Just doesnt seem right to me.

The fact is that job must have been worth Ł1100 for a firm to be employed to do it and everything you get with hiring a firm.

You got the job subed to you for Ł205 becuase that is what it was worth to hire a man to do it if that makes sense?

For example a firm may cost Ł15k a month to open the doors, but a man working for that firm only requires Ł2,000 a month to live.

The money the guy made out the job, although healthy, has to pay for the running of the business and all the overheads plus making a profit to keep the place healthy.

its nasty when you work hard for the things you want yet still doesnt seem to be enough... i dont know if this is true for most people or weather thats a ungrateful/greedy way of looking at things. i like to think i work hard as a landscape gardener monday to friday and a part time panel beater when i have the time but like all jobs out there you get some that are easy and some that really try you... just feels like waht you do will never be enough...

my view is that there will always be someone better off, and often those that seem to have everything are often in debt to the eyeballs, me, I make sure i own what i have and save for the future.

Rainy days dont feel so bad and as long as life is comfortable then you can't ask for more, when the opportunity to earn some decent cash comes along via work then great, its a bonus.

i am only 21 but got myself into debt a few years back, good at the time, not so good now and yea i regret it but im working hard to pay it back doing what i can for what i can... its not always rosey but its the way out...and in a few years im sure it will be alot better than now etc. you need to work for the things you want and my hat goes off to people who do just that and achieve there goals!
