Default AARRRRGGGHHHH - Now it's the clutch !!!!

Jeees, if it's not one thing .............. seem to be going through one disaster after another at the moment. First, the grill blows up in the kitchen, then the dishwasher dies, and then her iron packs in............all of which I could cope with - except, now the Focus wants to get in on the act

Drive into work this morning - no problems at all.

Come out of work tonight, get into the car, start her up and put my foot on the clutch pedal, only to discover that it's as sloppy as hell. Quick look underneath reveals fluid dripping from the bellhousing so I'm guessing it's the slave cylinder ????? Does that sound right ?

So, the car is now stuck at work in Croydon, and whilst I'd love to take on the job myself to save some money, I don't have anywhere to fix her or the tools for the job.

Anyone recommend somewhere in the Croydon area that could do the job ? Anyone want to take on the job ?

How much should I expect to pay - I'm presuming I should have a complete clutch done whilst the box is out ?

All suggestions gratefully received.............

Thanks

Pete

Sorry............too bloody wound up when I posted earlier - should have stated make and model.

Car is 1998 2.0 Ghia

It's done 156,000 and I have no history which suggest the clutch has been replaced, so if the box is coming out a complete new clutch is going back in.

Just wanted a heads up on what I should expect to pay really so I know if I'm being ripped off when I call around tomorrow for quotes.

I'd still consider doing it myself if it's really expensive - I'm just out of practice and don't own many tools these days.
Is it a difficult job and do I need any special tools ?

Thanks again

Pete

i done the clutch on my 2.0 zetec, with a basic full set of sockets, plus torqs ect, hardest bit is getting the box back on once you replace the clutch it is rather heavy, can be a cunt to get the passengers drive shaft out( which you could probibly leave in)

Nope nothing wrong with the clutch as said just the slave cylinder, you need to remove box to change, the slave cylinder/release bearing are one unit, it would make sense to change complete clutch while your there although it's not essential.

You should be fairly competent to make sure it's bled properly after etc.

Quick update:

Had to bite the bullet and get a local garage to do it - cost me Ł340 for a complete clutch replacement (although it was just the slave that failed) - that did include recovery from where I work though.

I almost went to Mr Clutch as they wanted Ł318 but heard some nasty reports about how they use cheap parts and don't always do a great job - plus I'd have had to tow the car etc.

So, clutch is great now, but the small blow I had on the exhaust seems to have got worse after being moved around - another assault on my wallet seems to be looming !!

Yeah, apparently it was a bitch to do as well - he reckoned that was the first time the gearbox had ever been out, not bad for 156,000 I suppose !!

Have to save up some money to get the cambelt done next, any one got any idea of prices ??

just for everyones reference i had to change the drive shafts on my 2l zetec mk1 and the passenger side is a bitch to do as its held in with a circlip. i found its best to remove the drivers side and remove the bearing carrier to make room and use a lump hammer and long flat head screw driver to go through the diff and whack the passenger side out.

getting the passenger shaft back in is also a bitch. i used a wooden mallet although a heavier rubber mallet would be best and with the shaft located on the splines compressed the shaft (removing the end float and holding the bearings together effectively making it solid) and gently tapped it in.

OP, glad you got it sorted. very god price that especially as they collected the car.

pretty decent price the clutch kit was 110-120 for a sachs one when i did it, as for timing the kit isnt that expensive but its not the easyist one to time the cams are not keyed to the pulleys.
