I'm sure there are some bad shells, but despite what some say even the std fit ford shells are ace, IF looked after.
I've just put me new crank back in, and used ACL for mains and GLYCO(federal mogul) for the big ends.
My crank has/had done 200,973 miles, was on the original ford shells, which looked perfect, big ends and mains, the crank only needed a polish on 3 journals at this mileage.
I re used the original thrusts which ad the same mileage of course, thrust was 5 1/2 thou, well within tolerance for brand new ones!!
I have brand new ones, the later all steel type if I needed them but didn't.
I would use ACL, VANDERVEL, GLACIER & CLEVITE, or GLYCO.

Same, after reading that other thread regarding bearings and some scientific info regarding bearing materials i have made my decision on Mahle motorsport, yes expensive (Ł200) but i have been assured they are the best and as i'm going for a tuned engine there not overkill
Nothing wrong with mahle full race, apart from the price!!
Mahle have recently bought out Glacier, and already own vandervel anyway, as they do COSWORTH, and we all know the know the SUPERB quality of the latest COSWORTH oil pumps don't we ?
There was a certain uk shell manufacturer who supplied "road use" and "race use" bearings, oddly enough they came off the same line, the race use were each checked for dimensions etc, whereas the road use were checked 1 in a 100, of course the race use ones were much dearer.
I use the person I use purely due to reputation, and 54 years experience(not age) of all things engine wise inc race stuff on his own engine dynos, and chassis dynos.
He's just building a genuine GT40 engine up at the mo only part useable was the block, shortly to be making his own rods.
I know one engine was over Ł100,000 as every part had to be made inc new block, crank rods, pistons, heads, valves, cams etc etc was for some old historic car.
That's why I'm using a std pinto oil pump in preference to a dubious quality exploding cosworth pump.
Quality of most components is a issue these days with recession and cheap chinese manufacturing.
These are just my views you must do as you see fit, it's your money.
I was very impressed with my 200,000 mile bearings, still have the mains and they look perfect if anyone wants to see just for curiosity.

Im using ACL and they are ok running 435bhp, but Ive only done 1600miles on them, The genuine ford bearings I took out of my engine though after 12000 looked good still. I dont think you can go wrong with genuine ones to be honest! If you fit them properly they should last a very long time indeed!

just a small correction here, Cosworth Engineering is NOT owned by MAHLE. We did purchase Cosworth technology, the road car engineering division which is now renamed to MAHLE Powertrain. Cosworth was basically split into two when VW purchased them, with the racing division (F1 & Champ cars) being immediately sold to Ford and then to the current US owners.
MAHLE has no connection to Cosworth branded products. MAHLE products are designed and manufactured in our own facilities and although we have Chinese factories, we only produce there for domestic OEM's. All Motorsport bearings are UK manufactured, all Motorsport pistons are German forgings with final machining in either US or Germany.
Kind regards,
MAHLE
The OE bearings were produced by Vandervell (now MAHLE) and are a high spec cast bearing. Pretty much all aftermarket bearings are sintered material, which has a lower load bearing capacity than cast. Also bear in mind the main bearings that most manufacturers are selling are Pinto bearings - same size but with a grooved lower shell. Again, this reduces the load bearing capacity of the lower bearing.
What the OE bearings do not have is the racing notch and laser marking of our Motorsport bearings. If you google vandervell you should find our race unit website which has some information you can download on these features. I'm not aware of any other aftermarket or OE bearings that are using laser marking and the racing notch design is certainly unique to MAHLE Motorsport bearings.
I am unsure who is producing the bearings for Ford now - as you probably know, the parts fitted to the car from new are not always the same parts sold by the dealer as spare parts. I haven't checked in recent months, but it has been a few years since we produced the YB bearing for OE Spares.
Kind regards,
MAHLE
