I'm sure there are some bad shells, but despite what some say even the std fit ford shells are ace, IF looked after.
I've just put me new crank back in, and used ACL for mains and GLYCO(federal mogul) for the big ends.
My crank has/had done 200,973 miles, was on the original ford shells, which looked perfect, big ends and mains, the crank only needed a polish on 3 journals at this mileage.
I re used the original thrusts which ad the same mileage of course, thrust was 5 1/2 thou, well within tolerance for brand new ones!!
I have brand new ones, the later all steel type if I needed them but didn't.
I would use ACL, VANDERVEL, GLACIER & CLEVITE, or GLYCO.
