Default Zetec Crank Sensor Lengths? Anyone measured them?

Got a Focus ST170 running an aftermarket flywheel and standalone management.

Went to fire it up today after fitting everything and it's a none start.

Quickly identified that i've got a 'blip' of an engine speed signal where it sync's for a split second and then flatlines with 0 RPM.

Measured the crank sensor to 36-1 trigger on rear of flywheel and the air gap is 5.5mm!

The sensor I put in is a brand new Focus ST170 item, i'm obviously now after a longer one to bring the gap down to less than 1mm.

Just wondered if anyone had ever measured any alternative sensors and got any useful part numbers to give me a head start on things in the morning

Cheers Luke,

I'm intending to go hassle the Ford parts guy tomorrow and grab 10 mins on Microcat and try and establish which models share what part numbers etc.

If I can find one 4.5-5mm longer then happy days, alternatively, I can go a little longer and space it away accordingly...

Sounds like you need to get the flywheel modded to bring the triggers nearer.

It would mean taking 5mm off the centre of the flywheel which would leave a big hole in the middle and nothing to attach it to the crank with

I'm not taking the box, clutch and flywheel off when I can just bolt a longer sensor in

The centre section is only 5mm thick? Serves you right for buying a monkey f/wheel

It's a dual mass delete/solid flywheel... It flares out from the section that is bolted to the crank... If it was machined away there would be an unsafe/no material left...

Sounds like the flywheel is off somewhere.

Are the triggers milled from the wheel or bolted on?

Might be worth mentioning this to TTV, so they can do a mod for future products.

I've made a couple of suggestions so far in terms of keeping 7mm of material extra in the centre of the flywheel so you don't have to cut that much off the flywheel bolts to stop them going through the end of the crank and binding against the block - might mention this too!

Hi Will

Ive got a couple of brand new spare Focus WRC timing sensors from cosworth with rachem covering and deutsch conectors

Should be able to adapt it to fit your engine

Its a puka motorsport spec sensor which are usually silly money

Out of all the Zetecs black tops, silver tops I have never come across any different crank sensors or bosses.

Put a straight edge across the back of the flywheel on the crank flange and measure the distance to the trigger wheel. You should be 3.4mm

Simon.

That is a heavy flywheel

Have you got the clutch attached to it on the other side?

Senors are all the same length here in the U.S. but the housings have changed some. I have a spare that is "shorter" which would help you. Let me see if I can find it and see how much shorter it is.
