Unhappy need help with 1.8 to 1.8td asap!!!

Hi there, can anyone help me ive have a 1.8d escort van, the engine died on me last week so i bought an 1.8td lump off ebay (due to being told it was a straight swop.....yeah right lol).

ive swoped the engines keeping the 1.8d gearbox and ive bypassed the shut off solinoid by ignition live and earthing it and the immobilser by friggin the starter with a push button it runs but rough!!!! it chucks black smoke out the back and knocks like foooook!

on the front of the the fuel pump there is another solienoid but im not sure what it is but what i do kno is when i put a live and earth to it, it makes the engine judder badly and smokes (black smoke)even more!!

i have an ecu, airflow meter and egr valve with wiring lume and keys to suit but not sure if it wuold pay to try and swop them as there is no ecu on my van!!??

is there anything i can do to make it run better?

cheers in advance. nick

by the sounds of things youve done it about right. id have taken the solenoid off your original pump and used that so no worries regarding the immobiliser. if that doesnt help you could try your pump just to see if there is an improvement. are you running with the turbo? the td's have a different pump that can sense the turbo boost to add more fuel. ecu, egr etc shouldnt be necessary, its more for emissions n cold start to warm up a cat. the problem is either pump related or your new engine isnt any good at all, pm me if you get stuck.
