Default Which Gear Knob? (Sierra XR 4x4)

Hi,

just joined after getting my hands on an old favourite of mine an XR4x4. Although its a 2.8 (88 E) its had an MT75 box fitted. The gear knob has pretty much fallen apart.

Just checking before getting a new one though. Do all MT75 equiped cars come with the lift collar for reverse? The remains of what is on has a small white plastic section that is fastened to the selectors by a cable but the cover has gone, the knob itself has lost its cover and is one attached to the lever by a grub screw into a groove in the lever.

Seen a few offered on net but would like a definative answer before buying anything from fleebay.

do not buy from ebay go into ford and just ask them for an xr4x4/cos 4x4 gear knob and you will get one for about a tenner
and yes it is a pull up reverse, you will see the wire at going down the centre of the stick, if this is missing then it's broken.
you might also need the horshoe shaped pice of plastic thet the wire attaches to at the top of the stick

Cheers Steve!

The plastic horse shoe is still there and I can get reverse ok (when box warms up!) just it flaps about a lot.

Need to find my local Ford dealer now!

Do they also still stock the central door locking motors too? (ie same as something later) Mine had the usual madness of constant locking unlocking so traced back to passenger front door and disconnected for time being.

Thanks for that but stripped all mechs down and soaked of with cleaner and then re-lubed with white grease (oil and door locks don't mix well, oil will break down the plastic parts and is prone to freeze) but it still did its one note Xylophone on speed routine.

I also corrected lock orientation and checked actuator rods which what leads me to suspect an iffy micro switch in the acuator itself.

What part of the locking mech normally gives the problem? Will take another look in case I have missed anything. Mine has the actuator mounted to the inner door frame mid way along with rods to the door latch mech (I think some had the actuator on the latch itself)

Ordered a new knob, maugh even be at the dealer but they haven't rung yet!

it's usually the linkage at the end of the solinoid that sticks, if the solinoid doesn't do it's movement 100% it reverts back to where it was hence the opening and then closing scenario.

Your a star Steve!

I haven't got round to pulling the solenoids out yet so will give it a whirl and see how it gets on. All other much was very dry and bit gummed up, thats all bang on now.

Do you find rear doors cause the locking to play up?

Managed to clear about half a small fields worth of crud from rear hatch latch mech!

Hmmm having difficulty with this ere knob!

Been down to Allen Ford in Northampton to collect it, its not quite what I was after. Chris on parts there is top lad and spent ages trying to track down what I need.

The knob thats arrived is not leather (I thought Cossie 4x4 all had leather knobs) but there is no collar to operate the reverse lift mech. I was thinking it would come with the knob, but appears not.

Is the lifting section that engages with the horseshoe bit with the bowden cable through the lever, the separate plastic tube (just ordered that at Ł3) or is it actually attached to the gear lever gaiter itself?

Anyone know part numbers etc? No Ford manuals/EPC etc seem to be precise on what goes where etc!

Thanks for any help in advance.

I think when the box in the car was switched to MT75 the knob arrangement was an after thought!

you will have the correct part the knob was not leather from the factory, and will not have the lift up bit as that is the horsehoe!

Surely not!

The horseshoe bit flaps about like a combover in a gale! Even Ford wouldn't be that crap in the 80's!

I am sure there is supposed to another part, ie a complete circular collar that sits under the knob itself, and slides up inside when reverse is engaged
