Morning all,

I know this has been done to death but once more won't hurt will it!?

ok here we go - What are the basics that I need to do to enable to PCs, both P4s running XP to see each other, wireless router connected to main PC via cadble, then second PC upstairs connected to router via wireless card.

This is for internet sharing more than anything else

Any advice would be marvellous

 

to do that you would need a wireless router with at least one ethernet port

and a wireless card for the pc not connected via cable

as long as its defo a router both pcs shoudl be able to access the net on there own without the other being switched on

 

you dont need cables as much

 

lol yeah I know but hte router will be inches from Main PC so why waste money on a wireless card

 

cool just checked outer I am getting has 4 ethernet ports, so no worries there!

just that every thread on wireless networking just reports on the misery people are experiencing getting the 2 PCs to talk and access the net... trying to avoid the same problems!

 

any other hints or tips?

I have got

US robotics wireless router in the dining room downstairs (most central point in house and allows tinternet in garage) This is a small wireless router , Then sat next to this is a broadband router jobby

I have the broadband modem thingy going intro the WL router by a short RJ45 lead (big phone plug) this is all hidden away in cupboard

Then on the desktop upsatirs i have a USB2 dongle thats wifi and came with the uS robotics router plugged into the back of the PC allwosing it to use the router and tinternet

My laptops all have a US robotics wireless card in also came with the US robotics oruter allowing taht to use the internet all the time too

The settings i did are

The modem is set using POPPOE and you enter your usernameand password as set by your ISP mine is something like nigelsherwood@aol.com adn the password is someting like cockhead

This then allows the modem to connect straight to yoru ISP

Then the RJ45 cable that i plugged into modem to router means that the wireless network also can access the net allowing all the PCs on the network access then set the router to use DCHP which automatically gives out IP addressess to your other systems to connect

I even have WiFi on my palm and can surf the net on the shitter , This took about 40 minutes to set up and i had NO previuos experience etc

The router I got is a broadband router and card combo thingy... so I am hoping that the router and card will auto detect one another. The router will be in the dining room and the Pc with the card will be in the bedroom.

after that its just a case of internet sharing enabled, and setting up the Pcs so that they are both using the same default gateway (do I make htat number up or will main PC have ne as it is already connected to the net?) then just assign IP addresses and check that they can see each other?

ISP is BT internet by the way

ok... can anyone recomment a good place to buy a Wireless Card for a DESKTOP.... can be internal or ideally external depending on if they are any good?!

oh its a NetGear router... but on netgear they only seem to have laptop cards or USB pen type things...
