mark it would be worth using some 383 mesh in your foundations will stop any cracking ,also dont leave the foundation open for long ,get the concrete in asap

you should get 8 sheets and use two in the foundations and the other 6 in your floor

Mark,

nice straight dig like that mate just mass fill the founds till about 150mm below F.G.L.

It will be around 16m3, which you should get around 65 quid per m2 at that amount. Thats about Ł1040. If you think about it, you will have to put at least Ł350 in concrete anyways, plus about 350-400 quids worth footing blocks, then sand cement and labour! Its not worth the hassle. We always mass fill if the situation allows it!

I'll let the builder decide how he wants to do it, but I have 10 tons of mot arriving on Tuesday, and the concrete will be ordered wed morning hopefully.

i would say 7.2m3 of concrete for the footings which i would use a 1.3.6 mix or gen 2 at about 60 slump this will make it nice and easy to gat a good level and a p320 / p330 mix with fibres for the slab at 6" deep which should be about 1.2m3 again 50 / 60 slump , if you go for mesh a252 will be more than enougth [ if so use a 50/60mm spacer to keep the mesh of the floor ] but if you add fibres it will make it bullet proof and only cost about Ł5.00 more a m3 . i see you are in lancashire ? if so let me no what materials you need as i am a manager of a builders merchant in burscough with plenty of branches around and i could poss help out with any problems or materisl
cheers fella and good luck

Mark

I am a quantity surveyor its simple enough to do, you need to work out the centre line of the trench to give you a perimiter and then times it by width and depth of the trench to give you the conc. for the foundations.

So

How wide is the trench?
What are the measurements to the extremes of the trench?

Do you want the conc. required for the slab as well? Need the depth of the concrete as I can work the rest out from the other measurements.

Hi Jake,
Trench is 750mm wide, to the outer extremes are 10m x 8m, the slab will be inside that at 6" deep.

the 252 will be sat off the floor by 3 inch if we use a 6" base.

You have 10 tonnes of MOT arriving? I take it you mean 10 tonnes of DOT stone? No relevance really to the foundations? ? ? ?

Right Ho

Foundations

900 deep
750 wide
33000 long (centre line)

equals
33.00x0.75x0.90 = 22.275 m3

Assuming the the 900 takes the foundations to the top of the trench and you want the slab to the same height and is 6inch or 150mm deep to the same level the slab works out as follows.

8500 long
6500 wide
150 deep

So 8.5x6.5x0.15 = 8.28 m3

Total conc. required for Found. and Slab = 30.56 m3

Your supplier should be able to work that in to tonne or whatever they supply it in and ask your builder what sort of allowance should be made for estimating terms as those figures are based on the calculations provided.

If you want I can send you a spread sheet with the workings on - pm me an email address if you're bothered.

Real rough drawing to check I have understood correctly.

The whole first semester of my degree was on foundations and the exam and coursework that followed so I'd like to think I can do this, put it this way in 18mths time 3 members of the rics should give me a little badge which say Chartered on soo.....

I work in M+E though so not much call for foundations in what I do.

BUT....

As its someone elses money I would preffer to email Mark the spread sheet with my calculations on so he can see where all the numbers come from to be sure...

Neat digger work there.

My garage is a similar size, 10 x 7 and I had nearer 12m3 in my footings and I don't think my trench was as wide @ 600mm (I think). Two lorry loads iirc, 6m3 in each. Maybe I have that wrong as it doesn't match what people are telling you or it was my poor uneven digger skills.

For the base I used 100mm of crushed hardcore followed by 100mm of concrete with a fall rear to front.

600 wide and 900 deep on those measurements would be 17.06 m3 for the foundations

Could have been 700mm deep?

Mind you I am just guessing here at something that happened a couple of years back. Mines done and I'm sure there are no gaps in it. Not worth worrying about my guesses Jake, your calculations are spot on for what the op needs.

BTW mine was up and watertight for about 12k so depending on what you can get cheap and who you know 13k is possible. That price didn't include electrics and water etc though.
