are you building a single skin, then rendered on the outside, if so 6" block are a bit ott ,as 4" would have done the job.

I would imagine with a 10m wall that the blocks will be laid on their side so as to not require strengthening piers?

I would rather not take the risk hence the 140mm blocks

I've just checked PB for some decent pics of mine during the building stage and there aren't any. However you can just about make out the way the blocks are laid in the below two pics. I guess either way works fine and if I'm completely honest I don't know how I ended up with it being done like I did. I think the architect just drew the plans like that and as I am not a builder I just went with it.

The wall painted White in the second pic is the 10m wall and doesn't have piers. The back wall is done in bricks for asthetics (I think) and does have piers.

Thinking about it I think they are 100mm blocks. I used 19 pallets of them so did get through quite a few yeah but I sorted a deal on them so it wasn't much of an issue.

Must admit i never understand how brickies set out wrong so regular! Its not like the gauge is hard to work to! Makes life loads easier too so its not like theyre saving time by not setting out correct!

A company from ebay and I can't recall their details. Its a standard 4m double garage door. Remote, metal slats, plasticol (sp) coated etc etc and was about £900.

If you have time look about on there and you may get one second hand. If not there are a few companies selling them.

its pretty standard practice mark to lay 100mm blocks on the flat ,which usually lets you build the wall without pillars.

is that the differance that doubles the price if this type of job Lee?

im no bricky, and sont really see it as a problem from a structual point of view, and as the spec states this garage is to be rendered to match the house, it wont even be seen

yep, seen them, my door is only 3m wide and have seen prices at £600.

No mate why would it double the price of the job? As i say its easier to do it right. Im not saying its not structually sound in fact im not actually saying anything really towards your job - im talking in general mate about brikies. Its always baffled me why they dont work the bond, it should be in their heads its not like you have to draw it out or anything

Is it being rendered inside too?

Ive also always beleived in the saying that i was taught, that more often than not, if a job looks right then it 'usually' is!

im still trying to find why some people charge so much more than others, and yes i can see what your saying, but i gave them a dimension this building had to fit into, maximising the space, so, from my point of view if the needed a half block then is there another way to do it ?

Yes mate, its hard to explain but theres nothing wrong with it needing half a block, afterall, half a block 220mm so is to guage anyways, it shouldnt be in the middle thats all. Cuts go in the corners. You HAVE to have cuts in the corners with blockwork anyway no matter what, to make half bond unless youre using 215mm wide blocks, so by working the bond out you only make cuts when setting the corners up, instead of having to cut when you get to the middle aswell! ! Saving time and making a better job!

I honestly dont know why there is so much discrepincy in pricing mate.

As a rule of thumb we charge 750m2 for dwelling extensions(ground floor), 650m2 for the second floor. £370 per thousand for facing bricks. £9per m2 for 100mm blockwork, £11 for 140mm blockwork(add 50p per m2 for jointed blockwork).
Blockpaving is around £50per m2 or £57per m2 if done in types like 'plaspave sorrento'.

Same place i have had my last 2 garage doors from. Mine was 11ft and was just over £600. They are spot on and would highly recommend them.
