Default Boost drop after new intercooler!

Hello all!

Tonight i fitted (i meaning a mate) a new bigger intercooler and since then i just gave ait some (couldnt help meself) and ive lost 5lb of boost!

Any ideas...all hoses, clips, brackets were done up tight! so im sure theres no leak there!

could it be cus of the larger size and more free flowing nature?!

Thanks for any USEFULL input (yes AJ thats aimed at you! )

Regards

James!

depending on the core and the style you will get a boost drop

5psi is quite alot though

Yeah if u get a bigger intercooler i though its quite norm to get a bit of a boost drop, though not sure what the average drop is though sorry. Nrom fixed by winding the actuator a bit more

i only lost about a lb of boost when i fitted mine and that was a big increase in capacity! is everything exactly how it was before?

why not just adjust the bleed valve to get back to full boost??!

rick just wondering if the cooler causes a 5psi boost drop would that mean the turbo is technically gonna be over speeding , as in a loose boost pipe makes a turbo over speed ect

jsut wondering, could be wrong obviously ( not like it would be the first time )

At the moment, the turboi will be doing exactly the same as it was. There is still the original boost in the compressor housing, which is where the actuator is taken from. If the actuator was being fed from after the intercooler, what would happen is that the engine would see the same pressure as it did before, but the compressor pressure would be up 5psi, and the turbo working harder.

You are in effect having to generate 5psi of boost just to get the air through the intercooler - thats a lot of power to waste.

No mate its just the "flow resistance" of the cooler, if you havent got a leak your turbo should not be overspeeding.

meaning making the turbio overspeed for whats its designed for in some situations

If you had gone from Standard to the Radtec, I would have said could be Pressure Drop across the Cooler, however, you went from Pace to Radtec. I reckon 5psi is too much.

Check all your connections again. You would be surprised how tight those Jubilee's have to be.

Agree with that!! tighten them up with a socket etc as i kept poping boost hoses off before! Though dont over tighten either as i have snapped a few clips

No, as the Pace flows very well, it's got a greater cross sectional area than the std, and the same flow path.

you really should be experiencing a pressure gain from fitting a correctly specc'd intercooler.
Pressure loss equals power loss
normally- winding the boost back up to where it was, generates more heat

When I went from my dinky Pace to the big Pace I noticed very very little drop in pressure.

I would say you have a problem somewhere, re check all the hoses and clips mate

Yes.. the pace cooler is single pass... you should not get a loss from a single pass cooler

Thats actually a very good point... people do seem to get carried away with ACT's and not even consider Internal air flow, external air flow, volume etc... All equally important factors when designing a high performance cooling system

Dumb question but have all the end tanks been fully welded?, if a weld has been missed out, then the leak will cause low boost. I've seen this problem on an American web site I go on.
