check the gearbox oil level or try giving it an oil change it might be that the oil is too thin due to being old which would cause preasure loss. if the oil is fine then it sounds like you need a replacement box i had same prob with mine wasnt worth fxing very exspensive and alot of work involved

The oil doesn't get thin as it gets old, worth checking the level, but v unlikely to be this.
Depends how much you want to spend, but sounds like it could be the electronic change module, located at the front of the box, a 15 minute job to change and costs £35.
Best bet is to take car to a auto trans specialist for a test drive and diagnosis.

Thank you so much for your help Tabetha.... The trans oil was low & filled up as you instructed, however, still won't move in Drive. There are no nasty sounds or burning smells, so hopefully the problem will be what you suggested. I am in Alton, Hants do you know of any good Trans Auto Shops near to me ? Thanks again...so very much appreciated.

I don't know any personally in your area, your best bet is to ask around or do a net search, ask in the ford dealers as dealers don't repair auto boxes, they use outside people as well.
What you want to do is find somewhere then get a mate etc to tow your car a few mile from home, then call rac aa etc that hopefully you're a member of, don't know if they'll take your car from your drive if you have home start ?, to a repair place.
The boxes are not the worst in the world tbh, there are far worse, they did have problems with earlier boxes, but mainly 94-97 the cltuch drums broke, the fordward clutch drum shattered, there was a diaphragm that split on the high servo losing ALL pressure and giving no drive, it's a pita, but can be done with box in situ, you'll be amazed what can, just make sure you use somewhere from recommendation, I used a place in Erith kent for a auto mondy box that lost 100% drive around 10miles after I fitted it, this was due to a seal/pressure loss problem, whilst there they even kindly snapped my aerial off the roof, and got the paint on the roof blistered, assume they parked it under a ramp with another leaky car on top, that was complete overhaul then as they didn't want me back after I had a paddy in thier office, was really pissed as car was booked in travelled 100 mile on piece of crap transporter and they said could I come back the next day, and this is for a problem of thier creation by not changing the parts in the service kit they had charged me for, £874 I think entitles me to be pissed.

Tab,

Bet I know who that was in Kent lol, bet it was in Erith....

A good Autobox Shop in Kent is Dartford Transmissions, honest and reliable, ask for Tony or Bob.

As you say the Mondeo tranny, (CD4E) on old ones or Jatco on later 5sp Autos is a pita as the subframe has to be dropped to get it out, but I used to do millyuns of em and were normally fine. Its usually loss of forward - broken clutch drum... loss of 2nd / 4th broken band and or band servo piston, or shifting down for no reason the range switch on top. ECU's and valve blocks don't give much trouble.

You're right was in ERITH, avoid like the plague is my advice!!
I really don't know why I used them tbh as they is a well established ace place 20 miles from me, I think it was just that CAR MECHANICS magazine had just had a box done there and the price was good, I should stop being tight!!
Do you do rebuilds etc still ?, may need(seals) a aisan warner 4 sp done ?

Yeah I'm still doing a few Auto's, like to keep my hand in. Aisin's no problem, only thing is I'm in NW Scotland, but some of the couriers don't surcharge and some do, just a matter of shopping around and sticking it in a crate !!

Let me know any time if I can help I will.

Cheers Dave

Modded RR ZF is most likely a forward clutch problem esp if it's got 4HP24 guts in it, quite an easy fix usually.

Thank you Dave.... Car just moves forward about 8ft in Drive and then stops..... I am trying to find a decent Auto Shop in my area (Alton, Hants) but haven't got a clue where to start.....

I found a couple on the net, however, they both said it would be a stripping the gearbox job before they had even seen the car and quoted between 850 to 1500.....

car still on drive and Im still looking for an Auto Shop .....

Thank you Dave & Tabetha for your advice, so diff when you haven't got a clue as to how minor or major a fault might be.....

I can't personally recommend anyone in your area, but....

It does sound likely that the box will need removing stripping and rebuilding.

The £850 quote sounds too low, I'd steer clear, somewhere between £1100 - £1200 is about right. Make sure this is for a full rebuild, 12 month guarantee and definitely includes a rebuilt torque converter as well (it should).
