Default Sky HD - worth using an optical cable?

Hi all

Sorry another topic about cables

Right, had my sky+hd fitted yesterday, and its fantastic

Basically, my surround system is connected to the TV via a scart cable, and its connected to my PS3 with an optical cable. Is it worth using an optical cable to connect the sky box to the surround system, or is the scart that comes from the telly up to the job?

If I were to connect it via optical, I would need a splitter of some sort, as my surround has 1 optical input, or would it be better to remove the optical cable from the ps3 and connect it between the surround and the optical output on the tv?

Hope that makes sense!

Cheers
Rich

i think your better off with optical as thats the only way to get true 5.1 from the sky hd box anyway?? think i read that anyway but could be wrong

Could I get a splitter and connect tv,surround sound and sky ???

If so how much are these?

I've got optical cable in the back of the TV. Everything comes out in surround sound Inc PS3 and Sky and only 1 cable needed. Not sure if it's the best way, but does me fine.

surely it would make more sense just to use HDMI on everything...

I use Digital Co-Ax for mine, just as good. You DON'T need a fancy lead. Infact you can use a normal aerial lead to make this connection!!

I had a nice Phono lead from my old Sky box, I simply used half of it!!

The sound is seriously stunning. We were watching 'Saving Private Ryan' last night, the windows were shaking!! PMSL.

Hmmmm so would I be best to have the optical between skyhd and surround sound to get a better or true 5.1 instead of optical between surround sound and tv now?

Regardless wether I use optical or coax that is

Steve,

I have HDMI from Sky HD box to TV, then Digital Co-Ax from Sky HD box to surround sound Amp.

Co-Ax is just as good as Optical, but less fragile and can be used through a tighter bend-radius if needed. I just used it because it is easier and cheaper, for the same results.

Yes.

Does your surround not use an HDMI? How do you carry picture to the TV?

Unless you're using your TV as a source [eg terrestrial or digital, which I doubt muchly as you have SkyHD] and sending signals back to the surround, then there is no point at all worrying about carrying sound to the TV or away from it. It should all be done through your surround kit [and keep the volume OFF of the pony TV speakers!].

If your Surround Receiver doesn't work via HDMI, then put your SKY+ HDMI to the TV and the optical cable [or whatever you choose] through your surround. There may be a minimal sound lag/difference but your receiver should have something to compensate for it.

Or go and buy a new Receiver and job job it all in one go. Onkyo are great spec for the price.

It's an Onkyo I have. SR674SE. That and the Tannoy Arena sub-sat system I have is absolutely awesome, now with Sky HD we can enjoy its full potential.

right have reconected using the skyhd as a source in to surround sound, sounds is much deeper and more even now, im guessing due to the real 5.1 dolby.

Lol no worries, back to my question eh

So, I am currently going sky hd box to tv with hdmi, then tv to surround with scart. My PS3 goes ps3 to tv with scart, and optical straight to surround. Would it be best for me to put in an optical splitter and connect sky straight to surround with an optical cable?

all dependent on the setup but the way i normally do it for my customers is either

skyhd conntected by hdmi to tv then digital optical cable to surround from tv

or if your posh and have panasonic or a high end surround that has hdmi inputs

sky hd via hdmi to surround then hdmi to tv from surround

hope this helps

if anybodys stuck for leads etc let me know i also repair tvs and sky box's

am also will to sell parts such as dish's aerials etc at cheep cheep prices to anybody in need

Mat

hdmi to the telly

optical to the amp

you get telly sound if you need to

you get surround sound when you need it
