Default Where's my solenoid?!??

I have the engine management light on in my 2002 ST170

Had the snap-on machine report two faults

P0420 - Catalyst system operating outside range

P1518 - Intake Manifold Runner Control Solenoid Stuck Open

Has anyone else had this fault? Where is this manifold control solenoid? I'm assuming it has something to do with the variable tract length.

I'm also hoping the catalyst fault is just a knock on from the solenoid problem.

Any help appreciated

You're catalyst has also died. Any history of misfires or mixture problems?

no, never missed a beat. only thing I would say since the light has been on it idles a little faster 900rpm approx and the seems a slight lack in punch.

ok bit of an update, I've identified which part is the control solenoid, it's this silver box on the bulk head

When I first ran the engine it pulled the flap shut at idle and put the MIL on

Then I turned off the engine, disconnected the battery, had a brew, came back reconnected everything, fired her up and the light had gone out. went for a drive, upto temperature, light stayed off.

Turned off the car, waited 1 min, restarted, light came back on!
AGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

What decides when to open/close these flaps? Is it something simple like a switch that could be at fault? Dont really want to have to buy a new valve thingy from ford, bet it's v. v. expensive.
