sry no its an escort mk4. Not now but this year or the next would like to change engine. do not want to go the old 1.6 diesel as it is slow, and will eat wishbones and other things for breakfast as its heavy.

It would be loads of work and cost loads too. Safer using the old 1.8 turbo diesel and turning the boost up and fitting front mount intercooler ect. Then just spend time getting the car looking good. Good luck anyway.

for example you need to cut alot?? I m not that keen on the old engines tbh because they are very very heavy, and the new 1.6 will get you much more mpg? or is the 1.8 not that bad?

The 1.8 Ford diesel engine is 1753 ccm.

And it's a really old design. Fiesta Mk3s came with that engine aswell so chances are good, you can make it fit an Escort Mk4.

Probably best to use a TD engine as old as possible (mk1 mondeo for example) and without PATS anti-theft, otherwise getting it running will become a nightmare.

It produced 90 bhp in the Mondeo, so 100+ bhp should be easily achievable with increased fuel and a bigger intercooler maybe. You might not have all that fancy direct injection stuff from the newer stages of the 1.8 engine but it should still be enough power and lots of torque for an old Escort.

yes even the escort came with the 1.8 diesel from factory. so fitting one with direct injection is out of the question then? like one from a late mondeo or a focus?

and what about mpg? comparing the old td with the new one?

sry for the questions but need some clearing up! thank you!!

I think the Mk4 Escort only came with an 1.6 Diesel lump. Not sure if that was the same engine with less CC or a completely different layout.

Anyways, you can easily get 55 mpg out of an old Fiesta Mk4 1.8D. Mk4 Escort should be roughly the same weight so that's what you can expect there aswell.

If you did manage to get the newer Pug diesel engine in a car as light as a Mk4 Escort, 70+ mpg would be possible, I reckon.

Only if you're an Emo!

Obviously you'd have to make your own engine and gearbox mounts. I don't think the engine is bigger so I doubt you'd have to cut any bodywork.

You should be much more worried about making it work in an old car with all the ESP/PATS crap it's got built into it.

hi I use the new tdci 1.6 engine in a new formula car we build and have a stand alone ecu that works really well and very tunable also no need for all the codes etc for a ford ecu but if you use the ford ecu you will need all the loom and sensors from the late car as well as the engine as itruns the can system and goes into limp home if anything is missing abs fuel speed etc
