Default Does this sound dodgy???.......

Just sold my ST220 on e-bay via best offer. The bloke is sending 100 quid deposit recorded delivery tomorrow and getting a loan from the company he works for to pay the rest by cheque.

This is what he just sent by email;

Hi Jim £100 cash is on it's way.

As im having a loan through work they need info, can you provide:-
Name and address
Car details e.g make and model, first registration, chasis number, cubic capacity, reg number and agreed sale price!!

They will provide a cheque in your name, obv I will have to wait untill this clears in your account before pickng the car up, sorry but they are not able to provide cash!! Should be able to send a cheque by thurs providing I have the details from you.
Hope this is ok with you?
Tom.

Can people who ring cars etc..... do anything with the info of the V5 that he's asked for??

Am i right in thinking that once the cheques cleared the moneys safe??

Call me suspicious but my policy is TNF Trust no fucker. He has decent feedback on ebay but only one transaction in the last year.

Does it sound ok or dodgy?? Think I'll ask to speak to his work before I go ahead.

Opinions thanks.

Tell him you dont mind waiting til he gets the cash as hes getting the loan it shouldnt be a problem paying it into his bank . The £100 is the deposit and you can hold the car for him .

As above, tell him to pay the cheque into his bank, wait for it to clear then bring cash!

Although its a little strange i wouldnt worry, hes given you a deposit so if the loan falls through thats yours.
Just hope he dont mess you about and it all goes through quickly.

could be pluaseable if being used as a company car as company will put it all through there books (depends where he works)

if it was me i would ask for a contact number of the person needing the info at his work etc then

ring them direct with info if when you phone up they now nothing then its dodgy

if its all above board ask for a bank transfer from them its a business so shouldn't have a problem with this method and

its cash in your account then get back to guy to say he can collect

if your banks got it it can be in your account within 2 hrs on a faster payments process 3dys max

hope this helps

Get him to cash the cheque and give you pound notes for the car....

or, ask for his full name and company, get the number yourself off 118118 and give them a ring. One of my mates was scammed years ago because the buyer provided contact details to his work to verify something but it turned out his 'work' was actually his mate sitting by a landline waiting for the call.

If in true doubt, walk away!!

Bit odd but plausable, some firms do that rather than have a lease car.

First I would get the £100 cash. If that dont turn up he is most likely scamming. Then ask him for the company details - there should be no reason I can see why they cannot transfere the money to your account - much safer.

BE WARNED just because the cheque has cleared is it not safe - OFTEN CHEQUES ARE PICKED UP AS FRAUDULENT A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER and at this point they can take the cash back.

iirc the cheque takes a couple of weeks before it physically reaches the bank it was issued from, and when it does, it may be found at that point to be bogus, or stolen.

i have heard of this loan through work before, just find out where he works and call to verify and YOU give the details to them as said above but google and yellow pages check the company....cheque should be no problem and ask the bank to check it out wait 3 days and you will have the cash in there to take out then give him the car.....

surely he can give you fake notes though for all these people saying scam , and you wouldnt know until you tried to use them or put them into the bank!?

id say research the company first, or maybe ring him uo instead of e-mails, dogy people talk dogey if you get what i mean

only thing i dont understand is hes asked for the capacity of the engine, that bit sounds weird to me.

Can't you get the company name and then call them direct to see if he is telling the truth? If not tread carefully

you obviously already have concerns about this so my advice would be to fuck him off..he may be genuine but can you afford to risk losing your car for it..there is no replacement for cold hard cash

Why does the company need this info up front.

Bollocks to that, they can have the info off the car when the guy has it.

Cash or fuck off.

Did he mention this loan before buying the car? I cant get my head round this company loan. If it was funding for a company car, wouldn't the funds be readily available without him having to apply for them, and wouldn't the company want to have the car checked out? And if its some kind of loan to an employee, how guaranteed is it that he'll get it? Surely if it was guaranteed he'd have sorted the cash first then found the car, otherwise the loan could fall through.
If it was me, i'd be suspicious, tread with caution.

Surely he'd already have/know some of those details, why is he asking for make, model and engine size? And unless you blanked them he'd know the numberplate too?

It isn't a scam I've heard mentionned before, but scammers often give themselves away for asking for information that's already in the advert.

Its a weird one, but I just spoke with him and asked if it was gonna be a company car he says he works for the local authority and its just a loan because they can do him good rates.

I then asked why they needed the info aout the car then? and he just said he doesnt know why and thought it strange himself.

I told him he'll have to get the cheque made out to him and bring me the readies when he comes for the car. I'll then call at the bank before signing the car over to make sure its legit.

He'll be comin on the train as soon as the cash is cleared so we'll see what happens I spose.

Weird deffinatly, but if the deposit turns up tommorow and i get cash paid into my bank when he comes then cant see how i could get scammed???

the details he's asked for are all available on a hpi check so cant see what he could do with the chassis number etc....

hmmmnn.

Could he not ring another focus with the details he's asked for, chassis number and plate etc, and as for the date of first reg. is it possible to produce fake documents ? If it's possible he may be hoping you pass them details on before you realise there is no £100 on the way. Or the cheque could bounce

Not as clued up as you guys, but just a thought.

my m8 had that with a bloke from birmingham when he sold his 2.8 3door he gave my m8 half through paypal and half on pick, as soon as he got the car the bloke complained to ebay which my m8 recieved a email about saying it wasnt what my m8 explained took the car and ebay refunded him his money, so id say all in full when he turns up just be safe

Well, deposit turned up as promised from the same address registered with e-bay.

Providing he brings cash and i take it straight to the bank when i pick him up from the train station (he's comin nearly 200 miles to collect) I should be ok.

As said above the details he asked for are strange but are available to anyone via hpi check.

see what happens next.
