Get him to cash the cheque and give you pound notes for the car....

or, ask for his full name and company, get the number yourself off 118118 and give them a ring. One of my mates was scammed years ago because the buyer provided contact details to his work to verify something but it turned out his 'work' was actually his mate sitting by a landline waiting for the call.

If in true doubt, walk away!!
