My Rs Turbo is officially a 3k DOG..
Hi all,
I bought a '91 FRST in November for 3 grand, its a really good looking, clean and genuine original motor - or so I thought.
After 10 days it broke down, and Ive had nothing but trouble with her since then, infact Ive had altogether 15 days use out of it in 3 months.
Im now looking for a little information. First of all, the standard camshaft. Is there a specific cam that belongs to the 1.6 turbo CVH engine, or is it correct that the 1296cc cam is the correct standard one for the car? Reason I ask is, that is what my local automotive store have told me it takes, so that is what was fitted. In 500 miles its mashed a new set of hydraulic lifters, and by the sound of it, the ones that were fitted yesterday are now failing too.
It also developed another issue, blue smoke when cold, but once warm this dissapears. I gather this is either piston rings, valve stems or turbo seals. I drove it back from where the new lifters were fitted, and had a large cloud of blue stuff come out the back whilst the engine was warm, and it has immediately started tapping and is now blue smoking all the time (obviously, Im not going to drive it anymore with this!) Can anyone confirm from these symptons what the problem is, obviously some seal somewhere just gave up the ghost!!!!
The car is officially a dog, a bloody expensive one at that! Im happy to keep throwing money at it as I need to get it right! Any advice on what I should be getting done to it would be greatly appreciated!!!
Scott.

well i would only put a 1.6 cam back in it. You can buy a special tool to change the valve stem oil seals, you dont have to remove the head to change them. Have a word with north yorkshire rs spares. Paul might be able to help.
take it someone trustworthy and pay the money, in the long run if youre going to keep it its the best bet.
You will pay more in the longrun if you keep throwing money at it

its not the best just to change lifters on a worn cam as it will just mash them up and mince the lobes on cam shaft. get a piper / kent / newman cam kit. might cost 200-300 but to be honest its the best way to go.
as for blue smoke start off by changing the stem seals, cheap and easy to do with the tool. you can make a tool using a old spanner, drill a hole in middle and bolt it to rocker stud, use a lever to push spring down to get collets out.
whip the down pipe off turn and check if its full of oil. that will tell you if its hot oil seal on turbo. Also check breather pipes are not full of crap/ oil.
but id say if the engine is chewing lifters up and has a fecked cam, remove engine and strip down for full inspection and fit new cam and a new set of rings and all new gaskets/ water pump and oil pump. then you know everything is good. then you will have full peace of mind and the cvh is piss easy to work on.

Thing is, it had a new cam 500 miles ago, and since then it mashed the new lifters that went in with that cam at the same time.
Can someone please confirm: Does the 1.6 turbo use the same cam as the 1.3 model would? (That doesnt really sound right to me at all)
When the auto store (who have a very good reputation in the local towns around here - family owned chain of stores in Notts/Lincoln/grantham/Newark and have been around for years) gave me the cam and I saw "1296cc" written on its packaging, I did ask if they were sure this was the right cam for my car. They double checked their information and insisted the 1300cc cam was the exact one reccomended for the Rs Turbo.
First things first, if they have given me a cam that is completely wrong for the car, then that explains some of the problems the car has, and Ill be going in there tomorrow morning to kick someones arse!

Dont think they made a 1300 cvh in a mk3 fiesta. I wouldnt think the cam is correct, i thought only the xr2i and rs turbo shared the same cam. I would check with another motor factors to see what they come up with fitting wise
