I have a plan!
What do you think?
I'll selling my 05 Honda S2000 and the plan is to buy a low owner, low mileage minted 88-90 xr3i for no more than £3.5k.
This is intended to be my everyday wheels and for the summer months a minted rs1600i for no more than £5k.
My questions are;
Are parts still readily available for both?
Are my financial limits reasonable?
Never driven the rs,i love its looks but is it any good?
Would I get a hell of a shock driving these two after driving "modern" cars for the last few years?
Spent my early 20's in xr3's and rs turbo's and just have this irresistable urge to return to fun, basic motoring.
Hell,even the wife understands me!
Sensible advise/comments sought.
Cheers

That's probably the best idea.
Can you still get parts for the rs1600i and does anyone know about this car?

Driving an old car will be a pain in the ass mate after your modern bullet proof jap wheels.
My adivce is as said, save up and buy a nice 1600i and have it as a sunday jolly car. This way you will be able to enjoy it, without the hassles that will come from using a 20 - 25 year old car every day.
I drive a new Audi A3, hassle free motoring, whilst my mates are having to buy new batteries, sort oil leaks, blowers packing up, accelerator snapping etc etc and this is three of four mates all having issues with their old motors.

If you're that desperate for a an RS1600i as your weekend Jolly save up and buy an ok one - 3k should see something half decent I think.
Defo not sell the S2000 to replace it with shonky old fords.
As for parts - in terms of old escorts - assuming the shell / panels is ok (which they wont be) and the interior is ok (which it wont be) the only thing you really need to watch out for is the metering unit on both and the ecu/coils/sensor lead on the 16i - but if it breaks you can stick it on a dizzy easy enough, the metering units prob get ok second hand - everything else should be within reason readily available - but Mk3's have a habit of munching things like Indicator Stalks - which prob aint so easy to get.
The tailgate will also be fooked btw.
Also... they dont have ABS aaaaand the brakes on a 16i are wowful even by early 80's standards.
And.. if you drive a Mk3 escort as a daily car - so 12k a year... even a good one will last 18mths tops.

I do think that a potato firing rocket tank built from an old tractor is a MUCH better idea than selling a japanese, 2 seater, rwd, convertible, sports car for a 20 year old XR3i. Much better.
so much for all these old ford nuts on here, "keep your s2000", now if u said u wanted to get somethin cossie powered then im sure everyone would be tellin u to get rid. never the less i would say go for it, the jab crap mayb be reliable but u can beat the sheer fun an old ford gives and the smile u get from driving it. good luck with th search
your car your choice mate but i agree if you were asking about a cossie you would be worshipped there is fook all wrong with old fords iv owned em for years and every time i drive my rs i feel like a 18 yr old again go for it buddy
I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!

Ahh, see now I would sell the Honda but not buy an RS1600i, what you want is a Series 1 RS Turbo for the summer (4k should get you a good example) and then a semi-decent non-ford daily run around for the rest of the year
Big-Dan.

Big-Dan.
you have to drive it for a week, then you will know what everyone is on about.
if you want to have a idea what its like mate let all the air out of your tyres then take the powersteering belt off, loosen all the fiuxings that secure your dash then drive over every speed bump you can find so you can flatten your exhaust......................etc, etc,you get the idea.oh i nearly forgot get used to honda s2000s blasting past you on the road and layby

ps ..i love old fords ......but im a oldschool idiot

cheers james
I drove a mint 16 I for just over two years everyday, did 25k. Never let me down, didn't rattle was fun and nippy. Steering a bit manly at low speed but no more taxing than my 01 fiesta that followed. Was still mint when I sold it. Trouble is most folk have never had a decent one with all the electrics and bushes refreshed and the bodywork/chassis with nil rust.
Having said all that. Would I sell an s2000 for a 16i and a 3i. No way

If that's what you fancy doing then that's fair enough, but I'd reconsider slightly.
RS1600i side of things is fine. Little toy for the garage, all good.
But if you've got an RS1600i, then why the need for a hugely expensive and mint XR3i? Surely your "fix" for this kind of thing would come from the RS1600i?
By all means, I think the RS1600i idea is great, but £3.5k gets you a pretty decent car for everyday use nowadays, far better than an XR3i.
If I were you and wanted a mint RS1600i + a daily driver, I'd be looking at a different daily driver. Just a few examples:
-E36 328i
-E39 525i
-ST200
-MK3 Mondeo Zetec S/Ghia X
-Focus 2.0 ESP

Lol.I'd forgotten all about this post from a while back.
Made a right ass of myself!
Anyways, went a slightly different route and bought a 05 GT Mustang last year and the XR3i comes next week.
Don't miss the Honda one little bit.
