rs turbo smokes a lot when cold what does it sound like pls
hi had my series two turbo for a couple of months now , on my 3rd one !!
if the car is left over night i start it up , drive up the road then after 2mins it starts to pour out blue smoke ,it does it for about 2 minutes then calms down.
it also does it if you boot it when warm when you let off the throttle.
ppl had said it could be various things just wanted some ppls advice as you may of been asked this before
it is definatly oil as there is an oily resadue round the exhaust and even spots on the bumper
shame cos the bodywork on this car is lovely and only had two previous owners so really would like to get it sorted
many thanks in advance and a happy new year to you all

Sounds like your turbos mullered take off the inlet pipe from your metering head and see if theirs any play in the shaft. A little play side to side is o.k but any in and out is bad news

As above, it does sound like the Stem Seals. Worth doing first anyway as will only cost ya about £10 for the seals (from ford), £15 for CVH stem seal tool, a new rocker cover gasket, and about an hours labour.
Just make sure you do it in a methodical way and don't drop the collets down the oil ways

Id say its stem seals but as jamie said as above it will cost u around £20 to do them and even if it aint thier worth doing as they are a common fault, they go dry and brittle, let the car warm up then accelerate hard then back off and see if you get white smoke, but as you said its blue smoke so go for yer stem seals 1st

yeah mate it sounds like the valve seals,
however when it comes to do the seals plug up the rear oil return gallies will a bit of kitchen roll or sumit as this will help prevent the collets dropping into the sump just make sure you dont forget to remove the tissue as you go
oh and use a magnet to get the collets off makes much easier work for you then put a spot of grease /vasaline on the back of them on re-fitting as this stops them from dropping off the valve stem while undoing the valve spring compressor.

The valve stems are easy to replace done mine the other day but i drop a collet down a oil way and that was a nightmare.
If you do it yourself put something over the oil way holes

get the seals done first as they nice and cheap!
but it could be the turbo. mine went and it was only on start up and gear changes that you noticed any smoke. as you wrote near the top - it doesnt have to pour out all the time and it would be blue not white smoke if turbo related. hope its not the turbo tho mate!

There are a number of things this can be...
heres a list of things for you to check/do
Firstly check the oil breather aint blocked!
simple if its full of shit get a new one... (easy wasnt it!
)
change the stem seals easy to change and may just be these that are the problem...(worth doing anyway)
check turbo
check turbo for play in the baering by removing the hose going to the compressor housing and 'wiggling' the shaft if there is excessive play the turbo is more than likely mullered. this would also explain the smoke on start up (oil sitting in exhaust) and the oily smoke on over-run
Please dont check the turbo shaft when the car is warm as you will more than likely melt your finger to the turbo shaft!
Finally if all this seems fine.. and you have replaced the stem seals and breather.. do a compression check to ensure that either the H/G isnt mullered or that the piston rings arent shot..
this is not likely to be your problem TBH as if the rings were nannered it would smoke under acceleration too.
Hope this helps a bit
