Default Focus Gear Stick

I let my mate drive my car today and he said that the gearstick doesnt return to neutral if it is moved to the lefthand side(1st and 2nd) however it does if it is moved to the right handside(5th and R). I didn't notice the problem only until he pointed it out.
However my uncle has a Focus Estate and he says it is the same in that, and my mates parents have a Estate too and its the same in theres.
Is this how the Focus Gear stick is, or is it a really common design fault in a return spring?

I would look at the return spring, it could be sheared making it not return to the netural position. The spring only costs about Ł5 from any dealer. There is a good how to replace it here, altough the pics are not loading. I have a pdf file with details on how to fit but can't add attachments here.
