Cossie headgasket identification

Sorry for the size of the pic, i wanted to maintain the detail as far as poss....
YB1261 gasket, is this a 'standard' sierra gasket, or a later Escort one - is it possible to tell from the picture?
Cheers
Rich
cheers martyn, yeah definitely a "standard" gasket.. i was just wondering if it was the 'later' Escort version which i believe also carries the yb1261 reference, but is generally considered to be 'better'..? Maybe this just a myth and in fact all yb1261's are all the same..

Hi Rich,
I believe from recent purchases that the ST Esc Cos YB1261 has now superceded all YB gasket part numbers other than the YBo611.
Thats pretty much my understanding of things.

That gasket is exactley the same as a Grp A gasket, except it has 2 additional metal rings (which i have circled):

So it is infact slightly superior to the grp a gasket, and cheaper too
Ford have to pay Cosworth a royalty to sell the YB0611 "grp A" gasket, thats the only reason they are more expensive than the YB1261.

All speculation IMO.
1) YB means Cosworth part number and NOT Ford. Therefore they must pay royalties on both or indeed buy from Cosworth
2) The rings are alloy and wouldnt corrode with water and anti freeze anyway.
Ive heard these stories so many times its untrue and from various sources. I believe the YB1261 is better for one reason and one reason only. Its the last gasket that FORD themselves fitted and i believe they would choose the best considering each would cost them the same.

I just recieved a YB1261 from Cosworth USA and it looks exactly the same as the one shown above. Should I be using this or get a Grp-A instead (4x4 engine)?, don't want to put the head on and find out this is not the correct gasket.
BTW. the gasket I removed was the same also but with the number YB1009/1 stamped on it.

well, here's the one I've just pulled out this afternoon.....

i don't know how old this one is, minimum 6yrs old, but by the state of it, i'd have said it's been in there a while...
-------------------------------------------------
on a side note, what's the opinion of whether this eroded waterway would be why the cooling system was getting pressurised?

The firerings themselves all look good, no sign of an actual "blow", but under hard use, the cooling system was getting pressurised and lifting the pressure cap, hence the reason for the change.... The fibre part of the gasket is pretty crispy!!

I meant to say that the gasket gives/breaks away(in time) from those rings
rather than corrodes as I know alloy DONT rust.
