engine upgrade in 1.6 focus
Im thinking of changing the engine in the y reg focus from the 1.6 to either a 1.8 or 2.0. Apart from the obvious change in the engine and parts can i just change the engine bay loom and ecu with the key. Or do i have to start messing about changing the whole entire loom.Has any one ever done the swap and could shed some light please.
The 1.6 is superior to the 1.8, to start with it's a light alloy engine and 1.6 and 1.8 acceleration is exactly the same. On both the mentioned engines the exhaust manifold is on opposing sides so will not simply bolt on.
Have you considered tuning the 1.6 for it has alot of tuning potential the 1.7 (Puma) saw 220HP in junior WRC.

r u sure m8???

1.6 0-60 12s 1.8 0-60 10sthen theres the tuning side of things the 1.6se zetec is shit and dnt respond that wel wiv mods, for instances a throttled bodied 1.6 wiv cams/exhaust ect make's about 150/155bhp. my 1.8 wivout throttle bodies makes around 160bhp add the bodies 180 plus.
im looking at the blacktop with scope for doing the turbo conversion later on.but what id like to no is can i get away with just changing the engine bay loom and ecu with key or do i need to mess about changing the whole loom
wel if ur goin the turbo route then u need a stand alone ecu anyway, that'll run the engine. ur old ecu runs the electronics of the car
so no u dnt need the ecu from the new enigne.

All depends on the cams used, how its set up, mapped etc...The SE is a good engine and you CAN get decent power out of them, but getting power costs money. Sometime's it is cheaper to just fit a bigger engine. You thought about fitting a 2.0 Duratec instead? I'd have one over a 2.0 Zetec!
a duratec does sound nice but will the wiring in the engine bay fit into my loom or do i have to convert the wiring.as for the 2litre blacktop i was just gonna run n/a for now with scope for the turbo set up at a later date
I think you'd have to change the wiring, a custom loom would need making id think. Probably easier to run aftermarket management too, but then it gets expensive. It's a conversion I'm looking at doing in the next few years
that rules the duratec out then.the focus is my daily runner i want some bigger for now.im after some thing i can change over a weekend.if a 2litre blacktop is possible and can just change the engine bay loom then sounds good to me.some body on hear did it a while ago but carnt remember who it was.i think they went from a 1.6 to a 2.0 as well
rule no1. there's no replacment for displacment.
iv seen turbo'd se's make 200bhp+
2.0e make make that na tuned 350+ plus turbo'd
dnt get me wrong the se is a gd engine in fiesta but does not cut in a focus for me.
again personal oppinon

1.6 is NOT 12 secs, it's 10.8 compared to the 1.8s 9.9 but in the real world the acceleration is the same it's a known fact.
The 1.8 may be more tunable than the 1.6 but does the slight edge on power justify an engine change? especially when the 1.6 has any other benefits elsewhere lighter being one of them.

when my focus was standard it beat my m8's fiesta zetec s mk5 and that is smaller and lighter than a focus so how can a focus wiv the same 1.6se engine be as quick?? a zetec s 0 -60 is 10.2 for fuck sake.
ur dreamin prob coz u have a 1.6.

I'm not arguing with you just stating facts, and no I am certainly not dreaming of a Focus iv'e got a Saph thanks. Below are factory specs from Parkers and in fact this states it faster than what I said:
Engine Size 1596 cc
Cylinders 4
0-60 mph 10.0 s
Power Output 98 bhp
Valves 16
Torque 145 Nm
Top Speed 115 mph

i dont no about the 115mph bit.ive had 125mph out of my 1.6 and it wasnt struggling.i think it could have done more and i do no the speedo does over read slightly.imo the 1.8,2.0 zetecs are cheaper to tune.hence the engine change over.i do like the 1.6 but they seem to be expensive to tune,im not interested in throttle bodys just forced induction only
the 1.8 kills the 1.6! esp when we get into 3rd gear we just pull off and the 1.8/2.0 is cheap to get power up, with an st manifold, cat back, decat, pipercross viper i made 144bhp and 141ftlb which is about 24bhp and 14ftlb of tourque more than i made the first time with a standard car, and the mods cost me less than 250 fitted!

115mph is well off the mark. standard the best i ever got was 125, now after a few mods filter, bluefin, cams, full system+ decat its gets just over 130mph........... I am thou now going down the 2.0l blacktop route because to gain anymore power out of my 1.6 its just going to cost big money,
Going down the 2.0 blacktop route sounds like the right idea for you.

im stripping out my st170, and doing an rs conversion on it.
so for sale i have full loom, ecu + key, gearbox + selector, coolant rad, complete fully dressed engine, fuel tank and pump, exhaust, airbox e.t.c... basically everything you need..
if you started it on a fri nite and you have a garage and a couple of mates handy with a spanner, im sure you could have it running by the sunday night!!

what im saying is mate can i plug my 2litre engine bay loom straight in to the existing 1.6 fuse boxs becaue there all multi plugs in to the main box or do i need to change the whole car loom to run the 2litre engine
if there of a similair year and its an engine and loom from another focus then i cant see why not..
Someone reading this must've done the swap who can answer his question, I'm looking at the same swap and would like to know as much as I can. Anybody????

This thread takes me back! If you want to swap to either a 1.8 or 2L then don't bother, it's been covered plenty of times on here, just do a search!
I am not going to list everything but put simply the two engines are completely different, and it's a lot of work, the similarities between the two engines, that being the Zetec-SE and Zetec-E ends with the name!
The inlet and exhaust are on opposing sides for a start, then there is the suspension/management etc (The Zetec-E is heavier and is of alloy/iron construction) opposed to the all alloy/plastic design of Zetec-SE engine, like I say there is a lot more than this, the general consensus being you would only consider such a thing if you really liked your current car or have a donor for the parts, else just buy the bigger engine car outright!

Out of what I wrote does not answer your question?
As I stated if you have a donor car then it's not to bad as you can simply swap the parts over, you will need the exhaust from the 1800 car to fit to the 1600 car, and the suspension etc, like I say it's been covered on here plenty of times before so if you do a search there are threads where people who have actually looked into it in depth and have listed everything you will need to do.

Swap now done. As far as the wiring goes its only the engine loom and ecu (with key or youll need an auto locksmith to recode the keys to the ecu) that needs changing. The loom includes the wiring back to the fuel pump in the tank.
Other changes were exhaust, power steering pipe from pump to rack, rad and hoses including heater hoses, expansion tank, engine mounts, drive shafts and gear selector cables.
The struts and brakes were already uprated so they're more than up to the job
Was it worth 3 days solid graft? Oh yes!! It's a far better car with a 2.0 than a 1.6

You will need the Puma ECU (If it's racing puma engine, 155 PS?) as that has VVT, in any case the mapping will be different.
It's just a case of connecting the sensors and then the ECU and sorting the immobilizer, I assume this is what you mean?

puma engine in and running in my focus but the guy who done it has 2 ecu running the puma 1 and the focus 1600 to work the clocks but the temp gauge is not working and cooling fan no working could i have the focus clock reprogram to the puma ecu or can fit puma clock.
