Which one would you have i have £400 to spend, what are the differences mechanically?

my mate spent 150 quid on an old escort td 3 years ago and its still going

I used to have a mondeo and I did over 40k in two years in that without much hassle - nice and big too

escort goes much better with less weight, mondeos are better but just too slow around town, i have both cars lol
o-60 in escort td is 11 seconds, o-60 in mondeo is about 16 seconds. both verry relieable and efficient, run on anything too.

 

the ones you are looking at will have mechanical fuel pumps so will run on fresh veg oil too

All mondeo td's are intercooled and have EECV controlled injection timing. Escorts may or may not have either. You generally get better mpg in the intercooled + eecv versions, but tuning is more awkward.

I voted Mondeo, plus it'll run quite nicely on chip oil (escort would too). I just prefer the size of the Mondy, and being honest, your not buying one for its 0-60 time are you??

 

Mondy I think it's a better car, back seats better too.

Personally I prefer Mondeos ... however Escorts do have some advantages; they are quicker and your are more likely to get one with a Bosch fuel pump which is more suitable for vegetable oil.

Despite what has been said above, TD Mondeos are NOT ECU controlled, they use mechanical injection. All the timing and fueling adjustments are done on the pump.

Also, again, despite what has been said above, the Lucas-CAV fuel pumps found on 99% (if not all) TD Mondeos are NOT suitable for straight vegetable oil - their weakness when it comes to high viscosity fluids such as vegetable oil is well documented.

Any that survive SVO or any other high viscosity fuel is down to good luck.

 

had 4 mondeo 3 td's not missed a beat and all three where/are estates as there really spacious and can carry almost anything you need it too and the 2 previous one clocked up well over 200k too so a well looked after one will be good for a few thousand miles too

one thing to watch would be te water pump/ timing belts if been a while for timing belt get both done at same time as they recommend changing togther as you have to remove belt to get to pump just imo though

 

Gotta disagree with you there as my mk2 mondy td had a lucas pump and I did over 25k on veg oil - some of it used veg oil and some of new. Never had any problems and I even drove through the Breacon Beacons in it.

I agree however that the Bosch pumps are better suited as my mates 150 quid escort is still going.

 

Had my current escunt for about 6 months now - never missed a beat and drives rather well. Gave £350 for it and then spent £300 on all new standard suspension, wishbones, bushes, top mounts and a pair of rear wheel bearings and it's spot on - Cracks on for 60 miles a day to work and back and does nearly 600 miles to a tank of whatever gets poured into the fuel filler

Currently on something like 150k on the original engine and it still goes well and doesn't burn any oil

 

Are these the 90bhp TDDi Escorts you got up until 2000/2001 that you're on about??

Look around 02 mondeo tdci £500 well i paid that
sold it £950 and was 280k !

 

dunno about engines cos diesel is the fuel of satan but the mondy is a bigger safer car, i'v gone from an escort to a mondy the only thing i hate is the turning circle is shite in comparison, but the mondy is a lot better for comfort and space aslo long journeys just get eaten up in the mondy.

 

engines are bomb poof had a 75 escort van and a td 5 door mk6, always kept clean oil in them, but besides never missed a beat, prettty borin to drive though lol. escorts do rust to, mine went on rear chassis members, think mondeos are meant to bit more resiliant to tin worm. id buy on condition mate

 

a friend had a 93 mondy td as a taxi in ten years he did 325k the only thing that ever went was a fuel pump which surprisingly went at 22k miles after all it cost him was general wear and tear repairs. perfect car that seems to handle pretty well compared to the vectra/passat equivelents
