IYO maybe, but as you've already mentioned reliability is the key when looking at cars in this price range.
And as said before a saxo or similar on its arse with loads of kit and filler is probly what he's looking for, so i guess your right ,there are loads of them about.

a bit left field maybe but what about MG ZR or ZS.
the 1.8 VVC (160 bhp) versions go for about £3k and other than the well documented head gasket issue they seem to be pretty good and quick ish.. most will have had the HG done by now as well
Look good to IMO.. 'specially in X power grey..
plenty to choose from so find a good one won't be that hard.
