Default Focus ST oil separator diaphragm

Oil separator diaphragm ahs gone on my ST.

Parts on back order at Ford probably due to high number of diaphragm failures. Could be weeks.

You can only buy full separator unit from Ford. Does any one know if the diaphragm itself can be bought on its own from Volvo perhaps and if so is it easy to change.

Cheers

Very common problem.

2nd generation T5 Volvo uses the same item.

If left for too long, it will cause engine breathing issues.

If you want to confirm that it is the diaphragm @ fault in the oil fiilte housing/separator, while the engine is running and the whistling is present, remove the dipstick and the noise should go almost instantly.

No, it is the whole assembly. Ring your local Volvo dealer and ask if they have any in stock. Explain it is a 2nd Generation T5 engine and they will know exactly what you mean.

Mate of mines had this fail on numerous occasions, fortunately all covered by the warranty.

I'm not 100% sure but there might now be an uprated one.

Anyway if your having trouble getting one from Ford, you might want to try Profile Automotive (Wolf/Code Red)

Default Focus ST oil separator diaphragm - failed :(

I think I'm having the same problem here... Interestingly mine happened straight after my 37.5k service on my ST3. I'm convinced Ford did this.

It's been back into Ford several times and they can't work out what or where the noise is (muppets) and have finally said you'll have to live with it and see if it gets worse!!! Could be the turbo they said, costing Ł2k. Jeez.

What a joke....

Anyway, I searched on-line and saw this post and I'm convinced this is what I've got, cold start, whistling noise raising with revs. Mine's bluefin'd and it makes the noise around 2000rpm.

Gonna do the test with the dipstick and then get straight onto Ford and get it in.

I hope Ford do this FOC as they have clearly damaged the unit.

Ok, so my ST3 has been into Ford now. They have confirmed it is the oil separator diaphragm that has gone.

I have been given a quote for the full unit of approx Ł220 + labour of 2.5 hrs

Can I get the part cheaper from somewhere else?

Please help?

Its not a difficult job, you need to remove the airbox assembley to get to it which is a pain. sometimes the breather hose from the assembly to the block can be damaged which mine was and needed to be replaced as well.

Have a look on FSTOC , im sure theres a 'how to' guide on there.

Its under the airbox at the front left of the engine. The oil filters are paper elements like in the VAG diesels. You can see it under the front left of the inlet manifold. The breather pipe is the one that goes under the spark plug cover at the front.

Also lost power and Sod all boost just a whisper.. Keep looking at my slege hammer losing the plottt Now...
