Default 205 block problems!

I've just done the headgasket on my 2wd saph, when i cleaned the block face up i noticed a very faint line from a bolt hole out to the water jackets. The car was running fine before i took it off, its not been studed, and the new bolts have all torqued up ok! Hopefully have it running sunday, but am i wasting my time finishing it off? Its been in garage for 18 mounths having underbody resto and cant face having to break it

yeah serious, it's from my old engine that the big ends died and it's just sat around doing nothing since, i've also pretty much got rid of most of my cossie so i'd rather someone make some use of it !

i am located in Sutton Surrey

Have done a headgasket on a 205 block, and most recently done another as part of an engine rebuild.

Didn't notice any 'lines'. It's hard to determine what you mean by 'line'. Is it a physical groove, or just a mark/discolouration?

It's a bit late now, but ideally you could have re-surfaced the block (known as 'decking') which would hopefully clear up any 'lines'.

Or, a crack test, or at least get it inspected by someone who knows what to look for.

I really hope that it was nothing more than a bit of deopsited carbon and that your car runs like a dream. Cossies can test patience

If it's just a line, not a split, then unless you're going for 400+ and track use it will be fine.
The 205 block is not the best in the world, but these hairline marks often appear.

We used to use dye penetration (PMI) on the harrier jump jet's olio legs etc as the fractures were so fine. Its amazing how the fine cracks showed up after a quick wash down. We cleaned up with Carbon tetrachloride first but am sure the must be some other engineering stuff available.

Check out NDT (Non Destructive Testing) companies or suppliers near you maybe Ian?

try rocol flawfinder you can find it on flebay or in any good enginnering shop its a 3 can system works well and shows up any cracks

can 1 Flawfinder Safety Cleaner

Prepares surfaces prior to testing
Removes contaminants, oil, grease, dirt, excess penetrant
Safe on metals and some plastics

can 2 Flawfinder Dye Penetrant

High definition red dye indicates surface cracks and flaws in normal light
Water washable

can 3 Flawfinder Developer

White film which highlights penetrant dyes
Excellent background for viewing
Water washable

hope this helps

My pump leaked after its lay up - flippin annoying. If you get a new one check before you fit. Mine from Woodford - a gen Ford mind you - wasn't drilled out in the inlet and I only found out after fitting it and overheating!!
