OK right here goes
Just broken my T5 and cant decide the best route to take, so looking for inspiration and advice.
Ideally need a box that can cope with 450+ftlbs and for mainly track use.
I have listed some of my options below.
If anyone has experiences with the boxes below your input would be helpfull.
1 = pick up another T5 and see how long it will last approx, £300
2 = get new gear kit and fix my box new seals etc and see how long that lasts approx, £500
3 = Get Tremec TKO box + parts to fit. Fit and forget apparently, approx, £3K
4 = Quaife gearkit, Been told not strong enough? approx ??
5 = Quaife dog box, not sure how much or how good (im sure you wll tell me Tony
)
6 = Elite 6 speed sequential
but have no history on these, approx. 5K (cheap for seq)
7 = Quaife sequential, as above but approx 7K.
Havnt got a clue what to do as yet, if paying 3K for TKO bullet proof, I quite fancy going a little further and go sequential at 5K . desicions, decisions??

Thanks Will.
Thats the way I was 1st thinking of just because of cost wise, but would be concerned that every time I do a track day it might break.
And if 1st thing in morning it would f--k up the whole day and waste more dosh

TKO for me
have you tried looking through some of the american car mags for breakers in this country - the TKO's are quite common on alot of ameican motors. worth a shot, bound to be a bit cheaper
or try american ebay, but shipping will be a fair bit www.ebay.com

i think if i was in your situation jacko it would have to be a tko box as they have proved themselves as virtually bullet proof and if you do decide to sell the car again or break it you would get at least half your money back out of it .i would imagine if anything went wrong with a sequential box it would cost a fortune to put right .

I think Martin "Reyland" does the TKO at a good price, but you then have the addition of bellhousing, clutch and prop to sort out.
Oh I hate tring to make descisions like this

could ring and ask what all the trimmings cost to fit straight in.

Wish i could afford a tremec for my mk2. It seems to last around 2 years then needs a £200-250 rebuild. Still cheaper than laying out for a Tremec i guess, and i can get the box out in 25-30 minutes on my own, just leave the bellhousing attached to the engine and drop the box on its own

Thanks for all the input so far
Hi Kevin
Whats the ratios like to drive with compared to the T5 and how good/quick are the changes
Advice seems to be go with the TKO but my mind keeps wandering to sequential, but probably bring me more greif than fun?

i have a tremec fitted to mine but found it wouldnt change fast enough at high revs ,maybe the box as designed for the V8s so they change gear at max 6500,or maybe the clutch not releasing quick enough, all depends what your going to use it for and how much abuse it will have

Sure Rod runs a Pro 5.0 Quickshift with his (would need to ask to be 100%)
I am looking at a Tremec once funds allow as i broke a T5 had it fully rebuilt and it was mint for 200miles then i broke it again doing a day at Pod so think its a waste to do it again.
Jacko

Thanks for the info Gav

But would prefer the ratios to be the other side of the T5 and would want to make sure the tremec shifts well and quickly.
Thanks for the link Dave

Here is a little pic of what happened

tabetha, the t56 borg warner is only rated to about 350 lb-ft i,m sure whereas the tko600 is rated to 600 lb-ft
Hi, the ratio q has been answered above, the gearchange i would say is about the same as a t5 box, possibly marginally slower at high revs but that might be my imagination
,
if you use it on road at all i wouldnt go sequential or any kind of dog box they are too agricultural for my liking in a road car..been there done that LOL
the tremec should be bulletproof bolted to a yb and still nice to use

Jag Getrag box - can handle over 500bhp, very similar ratio's to T5 box (5th is slightly longer), piece of piss to modify, I bought one for £110 & one for £50. Job done!!!

I just want to make sure I have this straight....
you have a car that does mid 10 second 1/4s
and the Gearbox lasts 2 years and only costs £250 to fix... and you can get the box out in 25 mins yourself...AND YOU ARE COMPLAINING!!!

what mods are needed if you dont mind me asking?
ok to make the job cheeper ,get one from a tvr tuscan ,still a tremec and these cars run alot of torque, but also alot of these boys run them in the tuscan challenge and some are cica 600 ponies,so do take the abuse, can be bought for £4 to £500 from tvr breakers, the only problem you will have is the gearstick is about 8 inches further forward, but this is easily rectified as you allready have a t5 box so unbolt the rear tail housing and bolt to the tvr box then your stick and g/box mount will be in the same place, also the t5 bellhousing bolts straight on so no hassles there, alot cheeper and alot stronger ,job done

The T5 has a selector shaft that runs from the gearshift to the selector forks on the top of the gear box, I wouldnt not have thought the tremec box has the same set up??

Mark
oh and it is that easy to convert the rear tail
out the options of tremec and quaife..
i went for the quaife with bronze selector forks. Bernie told me it will handle the 450 bhp 400lbs easily.
And i love the whineit makes

None of the above with a 3.6 CWP !
T5 is ok with 3.9 and a 610 profile tyre, just ! But you now have a 640 proflie so 4.1 is looking better !
the rest are not close enough ratios to keep the engine on song around a track , if you have some dosh try the Elite ( tractive, selholm,Drenth ), it has final drive Drop gears which you can play with to save changing diff ratios .
Or buy one of my dog boxes and gear it to suit your car
