Default temperimental starting issues

just seeing if anyone knows what my problem is, and anyone that can help!
right i have a 1990 erst s2. on most occasions the car starts fine and runs fine, but on the odd occasion it doesent, it just seems like it floods itself.
it starts but just dies out staright away. it always seems to do it when filled up at petrol station. if i have given it a bit of gas when turning it over, it just seems to make the problem worse, but if i just let it die out and leave it for a minute or so it will start!
any help would be gratefull as its doing my swede in!!!

It sounds very similar to mine mate. Does it just continously 'key over' as if it's out of fuel? If so, my issues have Been put down to a dodgy metering unit. Try taking off the lower boost pipe and see if anything pours out!

Idle mixture is too rich or too lean.

No mate, you can quite happily adjust the idle mixture yourself! Try 1/4 of a turn at a time anti-clockwise until it idles lumpy then clockwise 1/4 and you should be about right. Set your idle speed after this, but also in your case Marts you MUST bung the idle mixture screw hole!

If the cold start is faulty, surely it would have the same affect as it being unplugged? Most run/start better with it unplugged anyway

It's not that mate, the fueling can be set up correctly, but the metering unit can break at anytime!

I'll keep an eye out on this thread to see if and how you get this sorted. If my issue gets sorted beforehand, I'll let you know what I did
