Hi all,
I have been advised by Ford to use 5/30 fully synthetic oil on my RS Turbo but feel that this is too thin. Whats the best grade to use?
Cheers

Here we go again!
is it modifyed?
how do you drive it?
milage?
mines a high miler, extensively modifyed 200+bhp and i drive it like i stole it most of the time!
im useing silkolene 10-50w pro s (i think its called that) fully syn race oil!
but you will find the vast majoirty are useing mobile 1 15/50! or castrol rs 10/60w

Its a standard engine rebuilt about 600 miles ago. New cam, pistons etc. Standard engine. Like to have a race now and again. Used every day sat in traffic.

what did ya engine builder recomend?!
or you build it??
and if it was only rebuilt 600 miles ago you should still be useing minrel oil!
ment to run them in for 1000 miles then swap to syn oil and oil filter!
and ford put 5/30w in them from the start so if ya engine like brand new! 5/30 should be fine!
but if ya worried got with a 10/40! but i would say speak to a few tuners on here!
stu, karl(if ya ever see him) paul hills, chrstian and beccy of apt!

I built the engine. I have spoken to a few people about this and apparently 5/30 oil wasn't even out when Ford built the RS Turbo. They only changed it to this type after the Zetec engine was brought out. This is only what I have been told though. Think I will go with a 10/40 oil just to be safe.
Thanks for the input.

Use a fully synthetic 10w-40 or 10w-50 and you'll not go wrong.
In general 5w-30 has been specified since around 2000, it isn't necessarily suitable for your car.
Take a look at Silkolene and Motul on my website:

Guy.
If I wanted the best protection for my money then I would use Silkolene PRO S 10w-50 or Silkolene PRO R 15w-50.
I would want the benefits of esters in my oil to protect the engine at all times
Esters
All jet engines are lubricated with synthetic esters, and have been for 50 years, but these expensive fluids only started to appear in petrol engine oils about 20 years ago. Thanks to their aviation origins, the types suitable for lubricants (esters also appear in perfumes; they are different!) work well from 50 degC to 200 degC, and they have a useful extra trick.
Due to their structure, ester molecules are polar; they stick to metal surfaces using electrostatic forces. This means that a protective layer is there at all times, even during that crucial start-up period. This helps to protect cams, gears, piston rings and valve train components, where lubrication is boundary rather than hydrodynamic, i.e. a very thin non-pressure fed film has to hold the surface apart. Even crank bearings benefit at starts, stops or when extreme shock loads upset the hydrodynamic film.

We have had both the RS and TWS chemically tested along side Silkolene and others, compered to the Silkolene Pro S the Castrol TWS still does not come close.

What about Mobil1 15w-50 and 5w-50, are they 100% synthetic? The 100% synthetic base stock is called Group IV which Silkolene uses, while a more refined mineral base stock like Castrol uses is called group III, is this correct?
I'm afraid group III is hydrocracked.
Silkolene uses Group IV and V in the PRO products and these are the best.
This is how the Groups work:
These are the API base oil classifications which are used for base oil interchange and blending guidelines. They are based on sulphur content and saturate level. Saturate level refers to the carbon - carbon & carbon - hydrogen bonding mechanism within the molecule; high saturates considered to give a more stable product and to be generally more beneficial.
Conventional solvent refined paraffinic stocks as used in vast majority of formulations are Group 1. Group 2 not normally available in the UK. Group 3 are the high VI hydrocracked stocks.
All PAOs fall into Group 4. Group 5 is anything else, usually esters.
