Classic symptoms for thrust bearing failure.

Simple job to replace (well all bar removing the gearbox to get to it)

A thrust bearing kit, thats the bearing, new clips/springs whould set you back about Ł30. and once the gearbox is out it takes about 3 mins to replace (make sure to copperslip the clips and lugs/cups

wouldnt really drive it if you can help it, but if you have to then get it to work and fix it asap

I dont have any pics of my escort gbox resto, but heres some of the ones form the astom martin i did back in january.

The concept is basically identical.
Old and new thrust bearing

old and new clutch

Apply grease to the arms

Fit springe, push into place with screwdriver, make sure they locate!!!

check it all moves as it should

fit clutch, remember to align the plate and use the marking you made or the fly wheel will be unballanced!!

Check its all tight and refit the gear box and the interior.

JOB FINNISHED

go for a test drive

(I must appologise for the state of the car its filthy)

This is its first outing so was a bit tence and took it steady. Dont want to rev it just yet, will check timing again tommrow and have one more look to see everything is as it should be!

If the noise goes when you put the clutch down, its getting harder to get into gear, and it's only making the noise in 2nd and 3rd then it's 100% the gearbox!

Release/Thrust bearing will whine when you press the clutch down and be silent with your foot off it!

If it whines when the clutch is UP and not when it is DOWN then it's the gearbox, because when the clutch is DOWN the gearbox is dissengaged from the engine and nothing in it is moving hence the whining stops.
The release bearing is under no load until you depress the clutch to release the gearbox from the engine and that is when it will whine.
