Default Drilling Holes in the airbox

I have been reading fastford today and it says you can drill the airbox to allow more air through the filter thus increasing the power output, only fractionally but all the same increasing it.

I have a ST170 and have decided to install a K&N panel filter instead of an induction kit. This is because of the heatsoak effect the ST suffers from. I have also installed the v2 air deflector thus allowing more cold air directly down the snorkel.

Will drilling the air box allow more air theough and increase power or is it not worth the time to do......any help?

Cheers

There's an easier way. Look at the airbox and you will see another black box to the right hand side of it, its about half the size. Pull the whole airbox upwards to lift it out of its rubber mounts, then pull this box off the side, and then press the airbox back into its rubber mounts.

Its what I have done on mine, sounds the nuts

Hi Rich170, you mean the resonator chamber I assume....yeh I agree that would be an easier option. I have wondered why the resonator is there....is it to make it quiter or louder...I am assuming quiter...

Once removed, do you have to cover it with any mesh or does the filter stop all the unwanted crap...

Cheers for the reply..

The resonator box makes it quieter, so get rid of it and it will sound a lot 'throatier'! There is no need to cover the hole left in the side of the airbox as any air that goes through it passes through the filter

Finally got round to the old 'drill holes in the air box trick' on my Scorpio 2.9 12V. Amazing difference immediately! Improved performance certainly, but best of all is an increase in fuel economy. Before modification average was 18.5 per gallon, after mod average has risen to 24.5.
Seriously impressed.

It's not good to be sucking in air from around the air box as the Focus engine bay and especially the air box area gets hot, particularly at low speeds. It might not make a huge difference but it won't give you any power gains, the opposite in fact and should only be done for the sound.

all this will do is make it sound like you have a k&n filter fitted nothing more no power gains its an old trick used by boy racers to make the car sound more powerfull than it is why not cover the back lights with black tights to give the smoke tint look too lol
