have u a knock sensor fitted? If so make sure you have not connected the crank/knock sensor the wrong way round!or it might be the phase sensor you can get wrong with the knock sensor

Is your fuel pump working when you turn the engine over?

The fact that you can here your pump kick in tells you the cps is ok.
As for unplugging the dizzy I would have thought that normal.

maybe stupid question, but have you checked the timing is right? dont know if its wrong it just sparks at a wrong point or it doesnt fire at all...

The ignition timing is fixed mechanically by the CPS alignment with the crank pulley, so if valve timing is correct so is igntion timing, though it is possible to get cross firing in the dizzy cap, but it's not this otherwise you'd have a spark.
