ok a mate of mine come last night to bleed my brakes and pre mot my car, he noticed a large play in the wheel its self, such as up and down left and right [not the steering its self]

we have a look under the pedels and when you steer left and right its spins, the steering its self works fine, could it be a bracket that needs replacing at the top of the steering wheel or is it my steering colmn..

 

think its a bush mate under the dash above the pedals, mine does it aswell.......

 

i do hope it is, dont fancy a new steering rack.

will it fail a mot?

 

I had this on my old S2, think there is also a bushing at the top of the column, take the wheel off and you can see it...

mine was fitted upside down causing the wobble, just flipped it over and all was ok....

I might be wrong, it was a while ago, and my dad fixed while he was borrowing the car.

Mine does it quite badly on the s1! Iv seen steering column rebuild kits on ebay.

 

u can get the kits from ford as well,can fail MOt,but only if the tester had no nookie night b4,lol

 

I took my car to ford last year to replace two broken bushes and at the same time they found a broken bracket which had to be replaced so it could be that as well mate.

 

These are the bushes you want to replace:

These bearings tend to wear out slowly but they often also fail instantly when people change the steering wheel. As soon as you loosen the steering wheel nut, the spring tension is released and the bearings come out of the jacket pipe. If you're unlucky they'll rotate a little and the little black nose marked on the middle bearing doesn't align with the notch in the jacket pipe anymore. If you tighten the wheel nut anyways, you'll destroy the bearings as soon as you turn the wheel.

 

My steering is exactly the same. Mine was questioned at the MOT. The bushes cost pennies on ebay and the full rebuilt kit costs around £12. Not exactly gonne break the bank to get sorted
