These bearings tend to wear out slowly but they often also fail instantly when people change the steering wheel. As soon as you loosen the steering wheel nut, the spring tension is released and the bearings come out of the jacket pipe. If you're unlucky they'll rotate a little and the little black nose marked on the middle bearing doesn't align with the notch in the jacket pipe anymore. If you tighten the wheel nut anyways, you'll destroy the bearings as soon as you turn the wheel.
