My gearbox is quite notchy especially into 2nd gear and when it is cold. It is also quite noisy especially with the clutch down while moving. It has only done 1000 miles since new from ford. It currently has the oil recommended by ford in it and I was wondering if an uprated oil would make any difference and if so which one is recommended?

Not had a problem with mine & selecting 2nd gear when cold, did you get any warranty with it ?? With the correct ford oil in it should work fine from cold in any gear.

The noisy when you dip the clutch is probably the thrust bearing on the clutch.

The ford oil should be ok on a standard gearbox but some recommend 75w90 fully synth gear oil for all transmission parts. I'm going to try this in mine this year as the car & box is 14yrs old now.

 

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I bought it a few years ago so I doubt the warranty is still valid. The noise is definitely from the gearbox and is louder when I let off the accelerator. Ill try changing the oil - does it matter what brand oil I get aslong as it is fully synthetic 75w90 and I should put it in the gearbox and transfer box?

 

I went with Silkolene oil, they say it can go in Diffs, Gearbox & Transfer box. I've not done mine yet so can't say 100% how it works on a standard box, been told it should be ok.

Might be worth PM marco polo off here as he sells the uprated boxes & ask him what he recommends.

Matt, the 4x4 boxes are a bit noisy, especially on overrun, normally the chain makes a lot of the noise.

They make EVEN more noise when they go pop

 

personally i dont think the oil will make any differance

if it's noisey that could well be the first motion shaft bearing for a start

and if it's notchy thats could well be a a dodgy selector fork or sncro ring fooked or on the way out

i bet the box will need looking at

most ford garges only do reconditon units

I've got a similar problem at the moment with the box in my Escort and have also had first motion shaft bearing mentioned to me.

What kinda ball park cost would I be looking at for a replacement bearing, removal and splitting the box and refitting, based on current going rate of a mechanic?

 

I have a decent box for sale if anyones intersted and you can drive the car to check it for yourself before i remove it.

 

the oil in the link above is spot on for the front and rear diff - but for the box itself - you need the specififc ford stuff that makes it super smooth - castrol equivelint it called FMT - you only need 1.3 litres. then some dextron 3 ( 0.5 litre) for the transfer box.

they are rattly old boxes at the best of times though - when hot they make a right old racket.

 

The MT 75 box is still used in the Transit and the front layshaft bearing falls apart for fun in those , try driving in 4 th gear and see if it is quieter , and then in third and see if it is at its worst , as in 4th it is at its least loaded state and in 3rd its most loaded .

Also agree with marco as if it was oil it would be notchy in all gears not just second , would suspect a selector or a synchro hub / baulk ring issue to be the cause of this .

the specific oil for the mt75 makes a world of difference, but you need to start looking back a few years to find out what it is, rather than going to ford and asking for something which they have decided is better for you

if it's the input shaft bearing then these can be changed for not a lot of money, but it's the cost of getting the box out in the first place, and for that you might as well get the whole thing reconned

Mine needs 2 seals and the main shaft bearing done and it's out of the car ready to go.

I don't want to be put on the spot when I take it somewhere :L

My mate used to do it for me and it was £100 box in and out and fluids plus whatever it was in bits
Never paid more than £300 all in but I was an 8 time repeat customer so he was pretty quick at getting the box out
For someone who's never done it before it may look a bit daunting as there is a lot to pull apart, certainly not something I'd want to do on my drive

 

Didn't see you had th box out so it shouldn't be more than £100 as the bearing is £50 and it's only a few bolts
You might be able to do it yourself

if that's the only thing that needs changing then you may be lucky and someone will be able to do it for you

i've heard of folk doing the bellhousing swap to make a 2wd v6 box for as little as £40 so it's not expensive

get a few quotes first as normal
