polishing a black car
polish to clean it?
Just dont use any polish that has a harsh cut otherwise it will scratch it loads, like ag deep resin on a red car you would see where you have polished if you did a small area because of the cut, meguiars (sp) next generation 2 wax is quite good

i use auto glym ultra deep shine on my s2 and it brings it up nice. you only need a little bit as it goes quite a long way and if you use too much it's a bitch to get off. make sure you don't just polish though as it won't protect the paint. use something like auto glym extra gloss protection followed by a carnuba wax of some kind as this will provide a good layer of protection as well as giving a nice deep shine to the paint work. hth

To be honest mate I think your better asking some experts on detailing world, with a car like an RS500 you'll want it to keep looking as good as possible without damaging any original paint like you seemed to have mentioned above. Some of the guys on there may seem a bit OTT but it definately is worth having a look.
I'm one of 'those OTT guys' on Detailing World LOL!, and my XR2 is from almost the same age as your 500 and also has solid black paint, so I have a good idea of your situation.
It does kind of depend whether you're working by hand or have access to a machine polisher.
I'll assume you are working by hand and so products I'd recommend are:-
Good old Autoglym Super Resin for an initial application to slightly remove but mostly fill in and hide any light swirlmarks or spiderwebbing that may be on the paint. Obviously without seeing any pics I can't establish whether it has any or how bad they are. SRP on it's own isn't that durable so really needs topping with a wax or sealant of some kind, which I'll come to later.
If, after the SRP layer, you wanted to really add some 'wetness' and depth of gloss to the paint, then you could use a 'glaze' next. 2 that are particularly great on dark colours and black especially are Poorboys 'Black Hole' and Meguiar's #7 'show car glaze'. These 'glazes' don't offer any protection on their own, they are just designed for adding oils and fillers into the paint to smooth out the surface and, as I said, make the paint look 'wetter'.
Great waxes on black are: Collinite 915, Dodo Juice Blue Velvet or Purple Haze, Victorias Concours Wax, Poorboys Natty's 'blue' or even better 'red'
If, however you didn't really want to bother with a 3 stage system of Polish > Glaze > Wax, then a great single step product is Raceglaze Crem perfection it's a superb carnauba based 'All in one' product that works great on solid black paint. I used this almost exclusively a few years back and during that time I won 2 1st places at Ford Fair. Very easy to use and smells lovely, which is always a bonus.
I have kind of 'glossed over' (no pun) this to keep the post from being pages long and to keep it condensed, but hopefully it's helped a bit - any questions give me a PM
Most of the stuff I've mentioned is available from:-

Couple of pics of my black paint after using an SRP base, No.7 glaze and Natty's 'Red' wax. Since these pics, I've machine polished it and so it's now even better, but you get the idea.

Cheers

i use auto glym supreme if you can get your hands on it(trade stuff)works amazing but takes a while do it in small sqaures and always finish in a straight line not a swirl keep polishing the small sqaure(s)till you can hardly see the remaining polsh then use auto glym extra gloss and do it the same
trust me it will turn out stunning

Black is the hardest to keep clean, but equally gives the best results when detailing. For most cars I would recommend as little polishing as possible, especially on something like an RS500. My advice would be to get the paintwork cleaned and prep's ready for some good long lasting sealant. Either by claying the car or by using a decent paint cleaner. A nice finishing polish or like previously stated, Poor Boys Black hole works well on black cars. My recommendation for a sealant would be Chemical Guys Jetseal 109, it gives excellent results and lasts well. Follow this up with a decent lasting wax like one of the Collinites and your all done for around 6 months. Just wash and dry
Heres some black cars i have done with Jetseal.

Cheers, fellas!! Much appreciated!

Like I said in the post earlier, I don't really expect others to go through a multi stage machine polish > glaze > wax session etc. but it's the only real way to get a flawless finish with no swirls and a deep gloss. You can get close though by hand with some of the products I mentioned and the Raceglaze stuff is superb as an all in one.
Actually, following on from your PM, how did you get on with the purchases, Wayne Ash? Have you managed to try any out yet, mate?
To be fair, with the trim and badge being taped up with 3M blue masking tape, I think that Honda bonnet is a 50/50 before and after shot of a machine polishing session. Clio 182 looks superb!! My Dad's got one of these but in silver.
Another couple of cheeky pics of mine lol!
