How do you go about getting them unregistered with the cat C or D mark against them?

I have no knowledge of what the codes are for or if you can remove them, so excuse my ignorance.....
Whats the procedures then if i buy a car with either of the Catagories on it?

Has it been repaired or are you looking to buy it to repair?
Cat D means it can be repaired and put back on the road without inspection.
Cat C will need to have a VIC check done by VOSA before it will be allowed back on the road.
I think the category of the write-off stays against the car but I have heard of some challenging the decision to class it as a D or even getting the category changed from C to D etc.
Hope that helps a bit.

I've seen 2 cars, one is a Cat C and the other is a Cat D..... Not sure which to get.
Both are really easy repairs, one is bodywork and the other is very slight mechanical repairs.

I'd say the Cat D would be easier to punt if you didn't plan on keeping it.
Majority of people realise that Cat D's are cars that have suffered very little damage nut the insurance companies are trying to get older cars off the road.

also on a cat C it will show up on the V5 box at the bottom - special notes .. will say something like " vehicle has been substancially damaged " so sometimes can put people off buying when you decide to sell. Cat d does not show on the V5 but may do on a hpi check... usually cat c are more damaged than they look... I have repaired c and d cars and sold them also... best to go and view the car before you buy or bid...

Thanks for all your replies tho!

Its only cat C that should show on the bottom of the V5, I say should as ive got a cat C Astra van and its log book is clean.
There must be 1000`s of cars floating about that have been classed as cat C and D and have nothing on the log book, another little scam that is popular is exporting the damaged car, then bringing it back in and its clean, handy!

whether its a cat c or d bares no relevance to the severity of damage, it is based on the cost of the repair to the value of the car, for instance you may get a brand new range rover thats been rolled and is a mess thats only a cat D, where as for example I bought an 03 plate MGZR the other week that was a cat C and it hadnt even been in an accident, just wanted painting as it had been vandelised, but obviously the insurance decided a full respray would exceed the value of the car.
only cat c should go on the logbook
cat d should defo not show on the log book
vans are exempt from the vic test for some reason
and once its registered its not possible to get taken off cat c/d
the export/import thing does work but as it costs over a grand its usualy not worth the bother and takes months
