Default Advice on garage bill

I had my peugeot 806 in for mot last week and it passed but was advised it needed a few bits doing. It needed new front 205/65/15 tyre, front pads, tracking and i thought i would get oil and air filter service done at same time. Big mistake i made by not asking for quote,it went in today and was shocked by the bill, boss was not there so i am sorting it out tomorrow...Am i out of touch or is this silly prices for a 1999 peugeot 806??? a quick check on ebay suggests the parts are astronomical! I have also just noticed they have charged 'supply and fit front pads' and charged seperately for pads.

carry out oil service - £75
supply and fit brake pads -£60
4 litres semi synthetic - £32
oil filter - £12.24
air filter - £14.54
fuel filter - £12.76
wiper blade - £12.99
screen wash - £3.50
Front pads - £55.61
Tracking - £25.00
205/65/15 Tyre - £69.93

Total with vat £438.94 for pads, tyre and oil service...are they taking the piss???

Seems fair to me, apart from the two sets of pads!
ALWAYS ASK FOR QUOTES though its easy to say "Just Do It!"

But its easier to say "How Much!"

wiper blade - £12.99 depends what type
screen wash - £3.50 too high
Front pads - £55.61 too high
Tracking - £25.00 cheap if four wheel lazor alignment
205/65/15 Tyre - £69.93 depends what make

Prices dont look that bad to be honest.

I would question the 2x charge of the brake pads though!!

£436

less Vat is about £360

less tax is about £290

Less (expensive pug) materials, and disposal.

It does sound about right.

Its the price you pay for getting some else to do it

Everyone is guilty of it they will try there luck if they can and by the looks of it they have with the pads...

Ive many a time not asked for quotes and had a shock after.
Tell them they can have there pads back and take the labour charge of for the mystery set too

The prices on ebay were

Ferodo front pads £15
genuine oil filter £4
genuine air filter £6
genuine fuel filter £7
I cannot believe the price of the oil,£8 a litre plus vat for semi synthetic for a old Xud oil burning lump!!!

How much are the pads though? If they are £55 for pads alone then the other £60 sounds like just under an hour labour including vat to fit them if it was a main dealer. When I worked for Vauxhall labour was £66.00plus vat an hour.

Saying that, its an 806, pads aint that dear, surely?

They are definately not cheap prices! £55 for £15 front pads! £32 for 4 litres of semi synthetic and £75 to drain and refill it...you must be loaded!!!

what you have to think is that, because you can do the job yourself, the someone must do it at the same price for you, it doesnt happen, i think you were being lazy letting them do it for you if you just said do it, when you could have done it yourself, im just the same, can do - wont do !

exactly my point

The £436, after the VAT and tax is very roughly £290 ish

take away the parts and disposal cost of the tyres, oil, filters

and pay the mechanic. As well as the hidden costs, building overheads.

I really cant see anything wrong with the price.

As said just need to query the 2x pads but thats all

Like i said, if you want some else to do some thing its going to cost you money!!
Your looking at the £436, and yes it does seem like a big sum, but if you break it down, its not a lot of money at all

When i charge £200 labour to a customer, im only earning £156 out of that, a lot of people forget that!!!!

totally with you on that one. its a good price for someone doing that much work for you.

It is jim, however way you look at at... It think £32 for 4 litres of semi synthetic is well over the top along with the filter prices, its cosworth oil prices for a old oil burner.
Fair enough,i dont mind paying for there labour or tracking equipment, but they are well inflated prices for parts which is taking the piss. They also changed the passenger wiper at £12.99 although they passed it in mot last thursday!

I work for Scottish gas repairing boilers so I dont see any cash from customers at all MArk but I yes we are the most expensive in the bussiness.

You really think that 75 quid is an acceptable charge to do an oil change, even if you suppiled the oil?

That sounds like somewhere like Nationwide Autocentres. Places like that charge £70 odd quid labour. And I know of places where they charge fleet work £500 odd for a service and changing discs and pads.

For the amount of work carried out... AND the fact it's a main dealer, it's about right.

That said, as previously said i'd be checking the Supply and Fit Pads and Pads seperate, and also the carry out oil service/oil. Probably the wording, but mistakes can be made, we've double booked stuff before without realising and not noticed until it's been pointed out by the customer.

It was not main dealer,it was a independent mot garage who charge £50 an hour labour.

Its not a charity its a business....

They exist to make money.

Prices look about right to me for a major garage!!

I would charge less but I am a much smaller business with much lower overheads!

It was not a major garage but a small mot station in a small unit...I know they exist to make money, but you do not make money if people do not go back
There is no way the parts prices can look ok to anyone with a bit of sense,i have no problem with the labour prices but they are taking the piss with the oil and parts prices. £8 a litre for average semi synthetic from a 45 gallon drum??? £55 for pads??? £75 to change oil???

You very right there - sounds like some miscomunication is partly the problem.

You can't compare the prices you find on Ebay with what a garage charge - they need to sell decent parts and not the usual crap on ebay.

Pads from a BMW dealer will cost you much more than £55 - it all depends on the quality imo.

Alex
