Question Research Please Asist

I have been importing a 1996 escort cosworth RS into the US, bit by bit,
for use as a rally/track/show car to represent my shop in the USA.

I have about 30%+- of the running hardware and 70% of the original interior and exterior styling bits. My issue is this,
most of the bits are for the T25 small turbo model, I focused my search to the 1995-1996 model years. However, some of the parts I've sourced (by accident or by the action of dishonest sellers) were intended for the earlier large turbo escos. Manny bits I have not yet sourced, due to my uncertaninty of which parts to purchase.

Today's mission is to find a suitable MAF and MAP sensor for this EEC-IV powered Escos. Also about fuel injectors.

What are the dimensions of the correct MAF sensor ?

What is the part number for the OE MAP sensor?
....what is it's capacity for boost?
....is there a 3 bar upgrade available?

What sort and volume of fuel injectors where originally used ?

Are they high or low impedance?

Does anyone have a pin out diagram for the "COSY" EEC-IV computer ?

Sorry about all of the questions but google can never know the Escort better than those whom drive them.
Thanks in advance
Regards
Tron aka Racetracer

I "think" I have a set of injectors sitting around (they're high impedence). I did have a MAP sensor, but sold it only a few weeks ago and the MAF sensor went a LONG while ago.

The best person to contact regarding technical information is: Stewart Sanderson

Thank You for the information. Stu seems very busy, I shouldn't want to bother him untill I am ready to make it worth his time.
I sent you a PM regarding your injectors

I lived in the UK for 8 months and drove my employers escos
for the duration. Since then , I have had haunting dreams of
owning my own escos. I have driven thousands of performance cars and
NO car sold in the US can compare to the overall versatility of the Escort Cosworth RS.

My choice to assemble one from bits VS importing a complete car was simply done from a labor standpoint .. had I imported one ,it would still need to be fully dissasebled and re-built to racing spec. This way ,assembly will be the only step though It will likely be monitarily more expensive.
(I've already dumped about £8,000 and still dont have a suitable shell)
I'm not rich ,I just love cars ...you might say I live for them. I'm sure there are others here whom can relate to the madness.

You are crazy, but you are not alone here

The idea to race an Escos is almost mad I think, after several years of Cossie ownership. Parts are so hard to get and you wait for everything.... You may find it very hard to get good LHD shell and rack, but I wish you luck!!!

You probably found the best place help with these cars there is.

By the way you really should abandon EEC IV management and switch to something that can be tuned and diagnosed in the US.

If you insist I think the hardware for Escos management was borrowed from certain Mustang V8.

Those whom abandon the EEC-IV system are un-aware of it's capability's.
I do all my own tuning/mapping for any EEC-IV powered vehicle at my shop
The hack/definition file for the "COSY " ECU is nearly complete, which BTW is nearly the same as "ANTI"
It is easily 2 times the computer as a Webber/Marelli system and is fully programmable, also far less complicated to chip as it has a nifty slot on the back.
Most of the Fords for the US market are EEC-IV powered , tuning for these engines is increasing in popularity.
Check out Moates Tuning
They offer "do it yourself" tuning products for the Ford EEC-IV and other vehicles.

Yes, but none that would be considered "plug and play" nor any that fall into the "cheap" price range. (prices start at about £300)
The systems available for EEC-IV cars are "stand-alone" and can observe and Log engine data by splicing into the engine loom. It is up to the mechanic to interpolate between the data and any changes to be made

OK, so it's still aftermarket management for me, I think. I was hoping for a second that there is some data cable and PC software... I will have to look into Motec or Autronic at some point.

Hi

I probably have a few bits you need as I have just recently removed a lot of Small Turbo parts.

I have the original EECIV plus a chip from Stu, which can be plugged in to give a bit more horsepower.

Also here is a LHD steering rack, front and rear diffs, T25 turbo, steering column.

I'll send a PM with my email address.

cheers

Kenny.

Hi Jacob

No, I took measurements from the GpA car here and compared to standard. Then I made some drawings and asked Titan Motorsport to make me a lighter faster rack.

My rack now is non hydraulic and is 1.7 turns.

Kenny.

So you have no power steering at all? wow I wouldn't think of that. Must require A LOT of steering effot especially the caster angles that Escos runs?

By the way - can you tell me more about hill climbing series you take part in (not necesarily in this thread). We are looking for some hill-climbing events to compete outside our national championship over here.

Hi Jacob

Hydraulics gone, electric to be installed. so no more heavy pump and oil with all the pipework.

I could start another thread with all the hillclimb links if you like, or I'll just send you an email.

regards

Kenny.

Are you adapting electric PAS from some standard car or motorsport item?

Whichever is easier for you Kenny, I can read both another thread or e-mail
Best e-mail to contact me is jakub@4turbo.pl

I hope you don't mind if with show up with some fast jap cars?

The car will be RHD ,I've got a guy looking at a wreck for me ,it's a 93 4x4 RHD with the t-34. supposedly in motorsport trim
I had wanted to use the t-25 because many of the events I attend are small track parking lot affairs. I'm afraid the t-34 will not spool with the short throttle time. The big power is very tempting ,It's driving me to consider finding another escort for Auto X and using the big T Escos purely as a show/demo car.. I digress ,i'm getting ahead of myself ..we shall see what this wreck is about first. It's certainly out of the budget ATM.

Another Question, if you don't mind ?
Regarding wheel fitment , what is the mounting stud diameter of the MK6 escort rs?

4x108

Escos is different to any other Ford with it's ET25, so wheels from other Fords don't fit well.

As to turbo choice - if you are able to map the car you will have the best of two words if you get GT-28RS. It is available in vesrion that will be direct fit for Escos and should give good spool-up and nice top end power. I can't see you becoming sucessfull in american AutoX with an escos angainst modern cars without HUGE suspension mods though.

Agreed , but unfortunately this is where my best new customers are found.
The Escos will stand out and be noticed.

The real crime will be when I paste the shop vinyl all over it

As for being competitive..
I don't know if you've ever seen a US East coast auto X competition.
This is often a parking lot lined into a race course with cones.
A single vehicle race against the clock.

Usually, it's a bunch of mustangs and Subaru WRX pretending to be real
STI's with a lighter mix of Honduhs, old rx-7's and the occasional classic corolla or VW.
Typically, a good portion of the drivers are rookies.
Now, I'm not a great driver. Experienced though, I've had 11 years behind the wheels of racing carts .
Win or Loss ,the car's uniqueness will draw eyes and good advertising is priceless.

Here is another question ,unrelated to the above commentary and completely in the wrong thread topic :

Say a guy has a RHD mk6 Escort RS2000,... he's got a photo of his engine bay showing the brake master cylinder on the opposite side of the car than expected.
I'm wondering how this works ?
(I'm used to the master cylinder being on the same side of the car as the pedal)

Just out of curiousity - why are you looking at RS2000s instead of Cosworths?

Auto-X in the US is something like Japanese Gymkhana - pretty much the least car-destroing motorsport there is.

I haven't been to an event, I just have experience of talking to drivers competing and tuners preparing the cars. Some of them really professional machines for this purpose only.

Yes, indeed I am quite familiar with it. The Escort Cosworth doesn't lend itself particulary well to that kind of circuit. The thing that will make or break the car with regards to that kind of circuit would be a modified rear beam. You need to make the car as neutral as possible on those 1/2 gear circuits!

Not that easy to answer as the inlet is stepped from 78mm down to about 48mm (nasty but probably necessary to eliminate or vastly reduce erroneous reporting of backflow as flow). The step is offset from the centreline so that the bypass to the sensor element is at 12 o'clock. The outlet then tapers up to 70mm. It is part number 91BG-12B579-BA AFH55-7A.

Part number V93AB-9F479-AA. 2.5 bar absolute. Any frequency output map sensor can be used providing you know where all the pertinent parameters in the code are to change.

Bosch 0-280-155-012, 33.11 lb/hr with the eec's fuel pressure, high impedance.

Use the ANTI bin as your base file, it fixes an error in the COSY code that causes the powerup ram initialisation to fail.

Thank You for the very topical reply
I will now work with the ANTI.bin

Only to satisfy my curiosity.
Would you describe the symptoms of the failure ?

I'm not intimately familiar with tuning turbocharged vehicles, I've done my own with advice from
experts and with good result judging by the dyno numbers. However, "powerup ram init. " is a term I am uncertain about.

Roughly, what are the parameters for this sequence? (load, TPS position, RPM) ?

The symptoms do not really manifest themselves in an obvious way as they get cleared fairly quickly.

The powerup ram initialisation is basically a routine that assigns default values to certain variables when you first turn the key on. These variables are things like ACT, ECT, desired A/F ratio, battery voltage, open loop flag, fuel pump flag, underspeed flag, cranking flag, total spark advance, map, idle fuel modulator, WOT max aircharge and many others. The reason for the routine is that these values will contain junk when the ram is first powered up and until the eec has run a little while they will not get set to their correct values.

Got it , I always knew it by a less technical name.
(we would call it the warmup routine)
Thanks for clearing that up for me.

No Sir, I'm a bit of a "one man band" at the moment ,specialising in performance modifications for modern vehicles
and due to the US economy , not so much of that as I would like...

It's not my intention to import cars for others ,if I have you correctly.

I am bringing just one over the pond in bits and pieces and making it whole,
solely for my personal enjoyment.. er, I mean advertising and a showcase of my ability's both
as a mechanic and a driver Clearly a business expense.

Cheers
