Swindon to ditch all speed cameras

Shame the reason seems to be largely financial rather than focussed around the fact they do NOT save lives (although that does get a mention)

without wanting to bring up the "repost" post chip, this story has been draging along for many a month now
have they actually decided that yes they ARE going to now stopp siting and using these camera's or have they just decided to stop paying for new ones?
and what happens to the old ones?
and when will this all take effect?
when they are being pulled out of the ground i think we will know for sure, but until then, i think we should all hold our horses so to speak

So you didnt bother to click the link then which this thread is about, which would have taken a couple of seconds, and instead spent far longer to type in a load of nonsense about it being a repost when it isnt, they've actually had the vote now and it IS happening, before it was merely a suggestion.
i've read the link, it says they voted 9-0 to withdraw from fixed point penalty camera's funding
it doesn't say they are going to be ripped out or that there will be no speed camera's operating in the area and nothing baout the new specs cameras that are going to dominate the rest of the country like they do in nottingham
if they put out a press statement that said "no more fixed speed cameras in swindon and the surrounding areas" that would be different
now they are just telling us they aren't going to pay the government to be able to use them as they will find other ways to catch speeding motorists, which is worse i think

Here's the IAMs response. They seem to be in favour of fixed cameras at genuinely dangerous accident places, but against them when located in the wrong place:

Swindon's speed camera removal plan 'is tokenism'
The move to withdraw funding from Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership looks like misplaced "tokenism" and will have little effect on the number of people killed and seriously injured, said the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) today.
"Road safety impact is greatest at fixed camera sites, which are - or should be - at locations where speed related-crashes and casualties occur most frequently. That is where the greatest casualty reductions should be," said Neil Greig, IAM Research and Policy Director.
"This move by one local authority smacks of tokenism - and may fuel public cynicism that the priority is saving cash rather than saving lives. To describe revenue from safety cameras as a 'tax' is emotive, but not true.
"Properly placed fixed safety cameras are just one road safety tool not a substitute for active road policing or long term engineering improvements; they should be in addition to 'cops in cars', not scrapped," said Mr Greig.

all they've said, as far as i can make out, is that they are not going to pay the government the ammount of money they are asking for to run the cameras, there is nothing to say that they are ripping them up to flog off, when they will stop paying them, if this includes any other camera other than points related speed camera's etc other than they will still be catching people speeding in swindon
assuming that they ahve already paid for this financial year, that means that they will be up and running until at least the end of march in 5 months time before there is something done about not getting a nip in the post

Speaking after the vote, he said: "I understand we are the first council in Britain to get rid of fixed-point speed cameras."
i'm afraid they will have other means of catching us Swindon folk tho no doubt!
pity i sold the cossie!
i've been informed the Swindon police force have 2 evo's which are not standard for high speed pursuits; but they guy who told me that is known for speaking a bit of bully bullshit...so who knows

i understand mate
but have they gone already as in is this confirmed that there are no speed cameras left in swindon or will they be now stopping and starting to remove them?
in other words, if the cameras were tv's, have they stopped paying their license fee and got rid of the telly's or are they not going to continue to pay the telly license when the time runs out and then get rid of them, thus using them until the very last minute
from their statements it seems that they are pulling the plug now and have stopped funding them, but does that mean that central government will still fund them and catch people? i wouldn't have thought so, but these are very sneaky bastards i'm talking about, and if they can put a camera in your wheelie bin to make sure you are throwing away the corret sort of rubbish then almost everything comes into a different realm of underhandedness
