Default Damage to a cam ? UPDATE !!!

Hi,

I have a s2 erst which has a piper 285T2 cam fitted, I want to take the cam out and check for damage etc but how do I notice it, will it be scored or will one of the lobes look different etc.. Also, what should the measurements be ? this is so I can measure the lobes to see how much is missing.

cheers, Duncan

I just generally had a good look at all the lobes, some looked a bit pitted but you'll notice if ones been worn down, it will look sort of rounded on the top.

Also grab a steel rule and measure them...

Any decent engine builder will be happy to take a look at it for you i'm sure.

They will be able to tell instantly if its damaged or badly worn.

When a cam is new the lobes are a kinda black freckle effect, as they wear the freckle wears off and becomes a smooth silver most of the way round the lobe, generally the flat part of the lobe will always retain some freckle, and the point of the lobe will wear quickest.
If the freckle has gone all the way round, i'd replace it as a matter of course.
If there is any scoring on the lobes or bearings i'd also replace it.

Hope thats some help.

cheers lads I'll take a look at it tonight.

Should there be any measurements I can check, like a minimum lobe size or something ?

UPDATE

Had a look at the cam last night, on the pointy bit of each lobe there is about 1 - 2mm gouged out the middle, there are also other tiny gouges close to these on the lobe. All the black freckle effect has gone as well.

If you look at the lobe from the side the top kind of looks a bit like this,

|\___/|

Does this sound fooked ?

cheers, Duncan

True! a lot of it will have been through the oil pump at least... hopefully all got caught in the filter after that..

ok cheers, we've got the head off (again !!!) at the moment so I'll check that, I'll get a new oil filter as well. Most of the missing metal should be down in the sump with the oil shouldn't it

cheers, Duncan

yeah, a lot of it (depending how big the 'lumps' are ) will end up in the sump, but the smaller particles will float around and get up the oil pickup

Do you reckon if I change the filter and dump all the old oil out I 'should' be ok ?

the oil pickup is bolted to the block and picks the oil up from the sump, through the oil pump and then through the filter and off to the galleries - you can (with the sump off) get the bits out and get the feed (which has a metal gauze over the end) off and inspect it and check inthe oil pump for any metal particle damge.

really it is quite bad what has happened and will need thouroughly flushing out otherwise come rebuild time and a bit of that metal gets pushed through the system it could all start agian
