Bit of a situation(DVLA questioning my dads health to drive)
Right we have just had a letter through the post stating that they have "acquired" information that questions my dads fitness to drive his car(yes we now where this "information" has come from
)
Whats wrong with my dad you ask? well hes got arthritis(not just normal i forget the name) and also problems with his right hip(hes a full time gardener so that doesnt help) which means he cant walk without a slight limp and getting in and out of the car takes him twice as long as an able bodied person.
We think thats why our nosey as fck neighbour put in a complaint because hes watching my dad get in and out(hes got nothing better to do you see)
but as i said hes a full time gardener...................... AND he can drive his car perfectly, hes NEVER caused an accident in his life, just to give you abit of info.
Now this letter is from DVLA, says that he must go to his doctor and send a letter from them, and also complete a questionnaire and send it back.
So any advice? this is just really pissed me off, my dad can drive perfectly fine and he doesnt need the hasstle of going to the docs etc and sending shit off but how the letter reads it doesnt look like hes got a say in the matter
Thanks for reading my rant

yeah on reflection thats all it is, its just the fact we know who started it off
and i hope they dont say he needs an auto or something, if so the DVLA can buy him one
i'd've thought the only option is to get to the doc's do the test and be done with it.
can't see there's much other choice, and if he really is fit to drive then there's nothign to worry abotu, surely?

Its ok saying that to him but he doesnt have the cash to just go out and buy a new car just because the DVLA told him to, thats the other reason im pissed, that and my twat of a neighbour.
And i didnt really post this to ask how to get out of the situation, more a post to release my anger.

If the DVLA ask for an assessment they can send your dad to a recognized centre where his ability to drive will be sorted out and any recommendations can be made.....doesn't mean he can't drive but his car may need to be adapted. I went through this test this week after having my right lower leg amputated 4 weeks ago. I now have a carbon/kevlar leg and I'm still able to drive a manual car perfectly. Hope this helps.

If hes got no problem driving I dont see whats to worry about.
The docs wont stop him unless its something really severe.
Theres loads of folk far worse off still driving about happily.

That would be funny seeing as the guy has had his old astra parked on his driveway doing nothing for the past year(must be screwed) and also he doesnt work because apparently he cant due to back problems but thats absolute bull, i mean ok he might have some niggles but he walks fine like a younger person, we have seen him in the back garden digging etc, hell the guy could do my dads job better than he could yet my dad still struggles every single day to make a living.
Also he was reported for doing abit of work on the side a while back, and it wasnt us who complained believe it or not.
But yeah the guy is complete bell end, full stop

write to the dvla and say you've posted the letter to the wrong house and it's the nieghbour who has the driving problems not your old man and se what they come back with
just make sure you've got his name and address etc
then again, you can always say "what letter?"

Its like i said to my dad, its not because he thinks my dad is unfit to drive, its just because he wants to act like an arsehole and cause trouble
write back to the dvla and ask them for a list of acceptable medical centres in the area you would like him to attend and how they will go about funding the test, as it's not going to be free as he's not yet 60
a full medical costs from around Ł45 onwards and, in some cases, you will have to get it done by your own gp or go to a centre that tests hgv/psv drivers after they are 45, and they cost about Ł100

or they can send someone out to see him first hand driving/working etc.
then i would be mr vidictive against that cunt of a neighbour........forever.
as tony says you could go down the mobility route but your dads only 58 and working as a full time gardener so think he would want to that would he,they stopped me driving for about 3 months when i was about 30 because they thought i had epilepsy allcoz i lost a few hours here and there on a couple of occasions,i was absolutely gutted.my mates dad always drove manual cars and he only had one arm,he used to have a maxi !! they were a big enough tank to drive able bodied !!.hope he gets sorted mate.
You are missing a big point here, does your dad get DLA mobility component at the higher rate ?(pm if you want).
If he does then he can get a mobility car auto or manual all bills taken care of, if he is not in receipt of it, claim it as after he is 65 he CANNOT claim it even if entitled, it has to be claimed before this age.
The dr's assesment is just that, get it done no problem, refuse and carry on driving and he will be arrested full stop.
Everyone has a legal obligation to tell dvla of anything that does or may affect thier ability as a driver.
I have medical conditions that I have to declare to dvla, which is why my license was limited to 3 yeasr at a time to start with but now till 70th birthday or whatever it is(normal).
Easiest way is to just see the doc get evidence to support you, laugh at your neighbour.
If you do not see the doc then he has a legal obligation to report it to the plod and dvla.
You do not need a assesment, and this is irrelevant as they are not doctors and not medically qualified.
The distinction is they are assesing his ABILITY not his competence, ie is he able to drive safely not is he in need of adaptions.
The doctor will state his opinion and say he is fit/unfit/needs assesment for driving aids.
If he is ok etc then the doc will put that and that will be the end of it.

I used to know a dude with Motor Neuron's disease. He had a Motability Mondeo with this weird joystick - forward for accel, back for brake. He was regularly assessed to make sure he could still drive as it's a degenerative disease, and always passed. His driving was fucking appaling, properly dangerous, but they always passed him.
I'd expect you've got to be properly rubbish to fail.
But on the bright side, your old man will get a disabled badge, so he can park where the fuck he likes! Or, as others have said he may even get a motability car!

Just to clear this up.
The disabled blue badge is NOTHING to do with DLA(disability living allowance) where you need the higher rate of the mobility component for at least three years to get a mobility car.
The other component of DLA is CARE as in not able to do certain things cooking for example.
Blue badges are issued by the SOCIAL SERVICES, anyone can apply and you do NOT have to be in receipot of DLA or any benefit disability or not but helps your case if you are, some like high rate dla/mobility are automatic entitlement to blue badge.
This allows you to park on single/double yellows where there is no loading restriction, or for unlimited time at on street parking that has a time limit.
It is also free at a lot of pay and display parking places but not all.
Normal rules about parking near corners etc have to be followed, the rules of use of a badge are quite strict and misuse is a criminal offence, the rules again are different slightly in Scotland.
If you get high rate mob dla you also get free tax for 1 car whichever car you nominate as yours, but then the car must be used solely for the benefit of the card holder.

my mums been offered a disability badge because she's blind in one eye
they won't dock her any money either
my uncles got a disabiliyt badge and was offered a motability car, but he would have had his bus pass revoked
i'm sure different councils have different criterior they get people to meet before they start dishing them out, ealing council hand them out to virtually everyone
