I agree... i was going to buy the Canon IXUS 70 (£100 on ebay) as a replacement to my old IXUS 40 which recently died after 5 years of hard use, but was swayed to go a bit more upmarket and get the Panasonic Lumix TZ5, due to its wide angle lens and HD video capability.

forgot to mention the IXUS range of cameras can record video footage at 30fps at a resolution of 640x480 which is well handy for r/r & track days, or filming the missus etc

My brother got a pentax compact digital from asda for £69 not sure on model, but it does take good photos and price is good, but it depends what you want, he just wanted a cheap basic digital camera with 3x optical zoom and this ticked all the boxes, Worth looking in your local asda as they had a good choice in this price bracket

paid £178 off ebay for the camera, but needed an ultra fast SD memory card to record HD video so that was a further £40 for an 8GB SanDisk Xtreme III.

But the physical size of the camera is substantially bigger than the Canon IXUS range

You can still get a TZ3 witch is just as good as a TZ5 but with a few less features and about £50 less if you look around

SD memory cards are generally the cheapest

i like cameras that take normal AA batteries as you can use rechargeables, or if you need to buy batteries anywhere in the world they are always available, whereas a camera with it's own special rechargeable needs charging somehow which can be a pain on the move

there is an olympus mu that is shock and waterproof so you would not damage it - although losing it is another thing. probably beyond your budget unless you can find one secondhand

if these are all very important i cant honestly recommend the canon ixus enough... only thing thats small is the onboard memory which all cameras are tbh, but you can get a 4GB SD card for well under 10 quid delivered to your door

these photo's were taken with my 5 year old Canon IXUS 40 (4MP)

basically any of the new digi camera's from a quality brand will provide you with better photos than the ones ive just shown

but if youre touring America... i'd highly recommend a better camera to capture those moments you may never get again

here's a few from my new TZ5

and from the same position as the above photo using the full optical zoom
